JOB TITLE: VENUE ASSISTANT
GRADE: H13
REPORTS TO: YOUTH OFFICER
TEAM: COMMUNITY PROJECTS - ARMADILLO
1. JOB PURPOSE
To welcome customers to the venue and ensure the safety and smooth running of the Armadillo Venue. To set up and clear down the venue for youth sessions, events, parties and other bookings.
2. MAIN DUTIES
1. To provide a customer service which is professional, friendly and inviting to all users of the venue.
2. Light kitchen/café duties.
3. Under the guidance of the Senior Youth Co-ordinator or Youth Coordinator, explain to customers why entry into the venue may not be permitted (i.e. inappropriate behaviour) and handle non-compliant behaviour in accordance with the Armadillo Behaviour Policy.
4. Prepare the venue for use, including clearing away staging, AV equipment, seating, lighting and other equipment.
5. Carry out tasks as allocated by the Senior Youth Co-ordinator, Venues Operations Officer or Youth Coordinator.
6. Help customers to use equipment within the venue.
7. Contribute to new ideas or events when opportunities arise.
8. Provide feedback to Senior Youth Co-ordinator, Venues Operations Officer or Youth Coordinator regarding the running of the venue or programme of events.
9. For certain events (i.e. parties), there will be lone working, supported through relevant local procedures.
3. DIMENSIONS
The venue has extended opening hours and could be used by up to 200 young people per open session, and supports community events and party bookings. The post holder has no budgetary or staffing supervisory responsibility.
4. JOB CONTEXT
The Armadillo provides a place for young people to go and is open after school, in the evening and at weekends all year round. The venue includes a café, space for entertainment, music and a cinema. It has a semi-commercial ethos treating young people as customers.
5. SUPERVISION AND WORK PLANNING
The post holder will be line managed by the Senior Youth Co-ordinator. Either the Senior Youth Co-ordinator or Youth Coordinator will supervise open sessions. The Youth Officer or Youth Coordinator will oversee and allocate work, check and monitor standards, and provide advice and direction to Venue Assistants.
6. PROBLEMS AND DECISIONS
Under supervision, the post holder will ensure that all customers behave within set guidelines and that everyone using the venue is safe. Queries and feedback must be referred promptly to the Senior Youth Co-ordinator, Venues Operations Officer or Youth Coordinator, especially regarding safeguarding issues.

8. KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
1. Some experience of communicating effectively with customers from varying backgrounds.
2. Good communication skills and empathy to work with young people.
3. Able to maintain confidentiality but recognize when to refer issues to a supervisor (e.g. potential safeguarding concerns).
4. Ability to work flexibly, including on a rota system.
5. Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or willingness to undertake training.
6. Paid or voluntary experience of working with young people/community.
7. Basic working knowledge of health & safety legislation.
8. Some experience in a similar setting.
9. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND/OR STRAIN
The post holder may be required to lift and move furniture and equipment.
10. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Indoor environment at the Armadillo, which may be noisy due to music. Management of inside and outdoor areas. Work in accordance with the rotas.
11. EQUIPMENT
The post holder will ensure that faults or breakages of equipment (including office, catering, cleaning, cinema and disco equipment) are reported to the Senior Youth Co-ordinator or Venues Operations Officer.
12. GENERAL
This job description outlines the main duties related to this post and does not detail all duties required. The post holder will carry out other duties that reasonably fall within the general nature of the level of responsibility.
13. SPECIAL NOTES OR CONDITIONS
The post holder will be based at the Armadillo but may work at other Town Council settings and must follow the rotas. The post holder will undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service Check and subscribe to the portable update service. If convicted of a criminal offence or receives a caution once employed, they must inform the Town Clerk immediately to avoid disciplinary action.

3. Specialist Knowledge: Basic working knowledge of health & safety legislation including safeguarding requirements.
4. Job Related Skills: Ability to work flexibly, including on a rota system; maintain confidentiality while recognizing when to refer issues to a supervisor.
5. Personal Skills: Good communication skills and empathy to work with young people.
6. Special Working Conditions: Out of hours working as part of Armadillo rota; can be loud music, door management, and outdoor areas.
7. DBS requirement.

Pay: From £12.60 per hour
