The Ice Core Research Group is a dynamic, multidisciplinary team dedicated to reconstructing past climate and environmental change through the analysis of ice cores from both polar and non-polar glaciers and ice sheets. With a strong focus on international collaboration, the group leads major field expeditions, including ice core drilling campaigns in Antarctica, and plays a central role in high-profile projects such as the Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice initiative. Comprising 16 members-including analytical chemists, senior researchers, postdoctoral scientists, technicians, PhD students, and engineers-the team integrates chemical, isotopic, and gas analyses to generate high-resolution records of past climate. This is a unique opportunity to join a world-leading group at the forefront of ice core science. This exciting role offers the opportunity to contribute to two major, high-impact international projects that aim to unlock the secrets of Earth's past climate and environmental change. You will play a central role in Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice, a landmark European project aiming to recover and analyse the oldest ever Antarctic ice core. As part of a large international consortium, you will help deliver the impurities analysis of this core, which is being hosted in the BAS ice core labs. You will be instrumental in supporting a major analysis campaign, using Continuous Flow Analysis (CFA) to build a record of atmospheric and environmental conditions across the mid-Pleistocene transition (0.7 - 1.2 million years ago). In parallel, you will lead the impurities analysis for the NERC-funded REWIND project. REWIND is a new deep ice core drilling project on the Antarctic Peninsula, aiming to recover a 700-metre core spanning the past 20,000 years. The project seeks to reconstruct past sea ice extent, atmospheric circulation, and wind patterns to better understand their roles in the uptake and release of CO₂ from the Southern Ocean. These environmental records will be directly compared with a new high-resolution CO₂ dataset from the same core. The research will combine analyses of inorganic chemistry-including major ions, trace metals, and rare earth elements-with stable water isotope measurements to develop a comprehensive picture of past climate dynamics during the last deglaciation. Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop your analytical skills using a range of techniques. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to community-led research publications, lead their own research papers and present their research at international conferences.
