Job overview
We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated secretary to join our medical secretarial team within the surgery and Critical care division at Royal Lancaster Infirmary or Westmorland General Hospital. Current or recent Secretarial experience, with a typing qualification is desirable, together with excellent English language skills. Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.
Working as part of a small team, you will be required to liaise with patients and a number of internal and external departments, agencies and providers; therefore highly developed communication skills are essential.
Main duties of the job
* The post holder will be expected to provide a robust and comprehensive secretarial and administration service to the Specialty team, Service Managers, Senior Medical Staff and their teams.
* Creating letters and typing of clinical letters from dictation.
* Being the crucial point of contact for patients and care providers.
* Provide administration and secretarial support to the speciality.
* Responsible for all aspects of a named clinician's administration.
* Daily use of Microsoft office packages.
* To organise and attend meetings when required.
* Ability to take minutes for meetings.
* Checking and updating patient information e.g. results and discharges.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase and inpatient surgery.

Person specification
Education and qualifications
* Educated to GCSE level or equivalent to include Maths and English language.
* NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in business admin.
* ECDL or recognised typing qualification or relevant experience.
* OCR/RSA Level 3 or ability to type 60 words per minute.
* Audio typing equivalent qualification or experience.
Experience
* Previous administration and/or clerical experience.
* Audio typing experience or relevant IT skills and experience.
* Experience of working with a digital dictating system.
* Previous secretarial experience.
Skills, ability and Knowledge
* Knowledge of data protection and the requirement for confidentiality.
* Evidence of clear communication skills, with the ability to use tact and diplomacy at all times.
* Proficiency in the use of Microsoft office 365 packages.
* Proficiency in English Language.
