Job Introduction
Nations Business Operations in Wales delivers all aspects of output for BBC Wales Cymru across television, radio, online and social. The Wales Creative Director sits in the newly formed Nations Graphics team who continually push the boundaries to create innovative and amazing content, from VR & AR graphics to clear and precise information style graphics.
The role will deliver highly creative and hands-on graphic design solutions for editorial teams including News, Sport and Marketing across all platforms for the BBC as well as the Independent Sector.
Main Responsibilities
Reporting to the Design Director, Nations, the role will manage the Wales based design team to develop, oversee and deliver content, ensuring that it achieves the highest creative and editorial standards with adherence to BBC guidelines.
The Creative Director drives the strategic and creative vision to make innovative design and technological solutions by leading and inspiring the team, maximising the skills sets to meet the business and audience needs across platforms and languages.
* To work with software including Adobe Creative Suite and VizRt to produce distinctive content on a variety of platforms.
* Be a thought leader: A senior point of expertise on design issues, industry trends and developing technologies; a role model to designers in the team.
* Seek improvements in design production to develop further innovative storytelling practices for multiplatform.
* Line manage and recruit staff, including regular catch-ups, appraisals, professional development and managing of performance, in order to develop a world-class design team.
* Accountable for the delivery of content, acting within BBC editorial, legal and health and safety guidelines.
* Use strong stakeholder partnerships to share information and best practice, maintain consistent standards in the overall style, guidelines, branding and design of content to deliver on strategy.
* Be responsible for creating a positive working environment for colleagues from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences.
* To work effectively with other departments, suppliers and partners (internal and external) ensuring the BBC maintains excellent relationships throughout.
* To work closely with the Creative Directors in Scotland and Northern Ireland to increase collaboration and best practice across the Nations Design Team.
* Using audience analytics, lead a high performing team to continuously improve through design and technical solutions.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of the department's strategy and policy.
* Assisting the Design Director with resourcing and budgeting for cost effective project delivery.
* Represent the department externally at national conferences, panels and industry events to ensure that the BBC's output is viewed as a leading innovator by the creative industry and audiences.
Are you the right candidate?
Experience of a changing editorial agenda, demonstrating excellent communication skills in a pressurised environment with the ability to do your best work against tight deadlines. An advanced Adobe Creative Suite User with a love of moving graphics combined with a mission to explain complex issues to a wide audience and a portfolio of consistently great work demonstrating creative flair, a relevant degree or equivalent experience. You will need to demonstrate a passion for design and be interested in current affairs. A fascination with the technical side of studio production and digital workflows (on the job training will be given where needed) would be advantageous. Previous experience of managing a team is desirable but not essential.
