Please note, one day per week is currently fixed term for two years due to funding, however the other four days per week (30 hours) of the post is permanent.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within Specialist Palliative Care Services across Sunderland and South Tyneside. You will form part of a team of Clinical Psychologists and Psychological Practitioners developing and delivering psychology services for patients and relatives accessing specialist palliative care services within STSFT.
You will be involved in the provision of direct psychological assessment and interventions within your competencies, service development and audits, and training development and evaluation. You will receive high quality supervision from an experienced Psychologist within the team and there will be opportunities for CPD.
As part of this post, one day per week will be spent working on a regional project called the Improving Mental Wellbeing in Cancer Project. This has been commissioned by Macmillan, a national charity committed to improving the wellbeing of people affected by cancer. You will work closely with colleagues in the Northern Cancer Alliance (an NHS body, committed to improving services for people affected by Cancer across the North East and North Cumbria). The post holder will support the development of this work in the South Tyneside and Sunderland locality, working closely with the Lead Clinical Psychologist in this area.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have an interest in a career in psychology and keen to develop therapeutic skills to help undertake psychological assessments and interventions as an assistant psychologist. The post holder will have good organisation and time management skills and be able to support with project management and delivery. The post holder will be involved in the development of groups, workshops and training for both staff and patients.
Tasks will be agreed and reviewed at appropriate intervals under the supervision of a qualified psychologist, but the post holder will take these tasks forward independently on a day-to-day basis.

Job responsibilities
To support and enhance professional psychological practice within the service. Providing support, co-ordination, and administration to clinical, training and research functions within the scope appropriate to level of training and competence, and to undertaking related tasks to enhance assessment, intervention and evaluation within the team or care group. To work independently according to a plan agreed and reviewed through regular supervision by a qualified applied HCPC registered Psychologist.

Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of working with people with a diagnosis of a mental health condition
* Experience of work in a care provision (either in a paid or voluntary capacity)
* Experience in delivery psychological therapies.
* Experience of working in physical health settings
* Experience of psychometric assessments
* Previous experience as an Assistant Psychologist
* Experience of undertaking research/audit/data collection
Skills
* Good communication skills (written and verbal)
* Ability to work in a setting in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
* Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues.
* An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a health context.
* Competent in the use of Microsoft Office & statistical software packages
* Ability to undertake literature searches and evaluate research evidence
* High standard of report writing
* Research, Service evaluation and audit skills
Qualifications
* An upper second class honours degree or higher in Psychology
* Entitlement to Graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
* Interest in developing knowledge base and skill relevant to the client group
* Evidence of CPD i.e. advanced degree.
* An appreciation of issues related to physical health and palliative care
* Experience of using psychometric assessments
