The Pathology Laboratories at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust provide laboratory services to several Trusts and the primary care services for a rural population of over 500,000. The clinical biochemist team oversee clinical biochemistry sites at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, The Princess Royal Hospital Telford and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.
We are looking for a Clinical Biochemist to join our team and help us to deliver great care in a rapidly changing environment. Depending upon experience, participation in the Clinical Scientist out of hours support roster may be a requirement. The successful candidate will be expected to work across all sites, as the service requires.
The post is advertised for a Band 8a clinical scientist but applicants that do not meet essential criteria may be employed at Band 7 with progression to 8a on successful completion of RCPath Clinical Biochemistry part 1 written examination, and achievement of competency. Therefore, we welcome applicants with a range of experience and can tailor the job role and responsibilities accordingly.
Main duties of the job
This is a 12 month fixed term contract. You will perform a broad and demanding range of scientific and leadership roles in order to provide and develop Clinical Biochemistry Services for the Trust and service users. You will work with a considerable degree of autonomy and assume responsibility for individual patient outcomes within the overall responsibility of the Lead Clinical Scientist or Chemical Pathologist. You will take responsibility for directing and monitoring the outcome of medium-term service improvement schemes.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registration as a HCPC clinical scientist obtained or near to being obtained
* Master's Degree in Clinical Biochemistry or assessed equivalent of knowledge plus further specialist training and/or experience within the speciality of Clinical Biochemistry
* Degree in related science subject
* Part 1 of FRC Path HCPC registered Clinical Scientist
Experience and Knowledge
* Completion or near completion of STP or other recognised Biochemistry training scheme
* To have a thorough knowledge of human biochemistry and analytical chemistry including metabolic processes, physiology, pharmacology and drug interference
* To have a thorough knowledge of metabolic medicine in adults, children and neonates including inherited disorders, endocrinology disease states and toxicology
* To have a good knowledge of routine and specialised analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving
