In the absence of a Neonatal registrar the post holder is responsible for ordering necessary investigations, and take responsibility for acting upon results, providing treatment and care both individually, as part of a team, and through referral to other agencies. Make a differential diagnoses using decision making and problem solving skills. Decide on and carry out treatment, including the prescribing of medicines within agreed formulary and scope of non-medical prescribing, and refer to specialists as appropriate. Be fluent with and adhere to local protocols and guidelines Assess and evaluate with patients and their carers the effectiveness of the treatment and care provided and make changes as necessary. This will include consultation with patients and carers where the post holder may be communicating sensitive and complex condition related information where there may be barriers to understanding. On occasions this may also include breaking bad news where the treatment has been ineffective and the condition may be terminal or life limiting. Has the authority to admit or discharge babies within their speciality area dependant on their level of experience and in line with local guidance and refer patients to other health care providers as appropriate.
