Job Description Summary
As lead engineer, the successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic team of engineers working on the delivery and application engineering of existing and new electronic applications, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming HVDC Grid. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE's leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
The role of Lead Electronic Hardware Engineer offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skills, and pursue personal development within an internationally recognized company in this exciting field. The role has a level of autonomy but is focused on the execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. A degree of judgment will be required at this level but can be supplemented by guidance where required.
Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, there may be some international travel to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers, and contract customers.
Responsibilities:
1. The candidate requires a good level of technical understanding and working experience of digital and analogue electronic design, including power supply circuits, control, and protection circuits of power electronic devices such as IGBT and thyristor.
2. The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and understanding of electronic components and principles.
3. The candidate is expected to have good knowledge and experience in testing to validate electronic circuits using prior experience and on-the-job training. It is required to have technical skills and analytic thinking to perform fault analysis and design improvement, including performing bench level and high voltage testing.
4. An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods, and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.
5. Generate technical documentation such as test reports and specifications for electronic circuits.
6. Perform routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing of converter valves.
7. Provide product support during the complete life cycle from development to tender and commissioning of projects.
8. Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.
Candidate Profile:
The candidate requires electronics expertise at the graduate level or equivalent experience, with a good level of technical understanding of digital, and where possible, analogue electronic design for an industrial control system.
The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and understanding of electronic components and principles.
The candidate should demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge.
An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods, and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.
At this level, it is expected that some level of judgment and the ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters, but with guidance, will be necessary. The candidate will use prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks and may use multiple internal sources to arrive at decisions.
Qualifications/Requirements:
1. Educated to degree level in electronic engineering.
Required Characteristics:
1. Able to work to deadlines with high quality and accuracy.
2. Dynamic and proactive, with the ability to work on one's own or as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team to resolve technical issues.
3. Knowledge of HVDC (preferred attribute).
4. Aware of EHS compliance in design and engineering.
5. Knowledge of digital electronic circuit design and development.
6. Knowledge of analogue electronic circuit design and development.
7. Knowledge of schematic capture supervision.
8. Knowledge of PCB layout supervision, including rules & constraints.
9. Knowledge of electronic component selection, analysis, and qualification testing.
10. Aware of Controllership and ROHS/REACH compliance.
11. Knowledge of FPGA component selection.
12. Experience in product verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing).
13. Experience in electronic design for EMC.
14. Experience in design for manufacture (DFM), test (DFT), industrialization, and design to cost.
15. Some knowledge and experience in firmware code development (preferred attribute).
16. Some knowledge and experience in model-based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice) (preferred attribute).
Specific Abilities:
1. Able to work to deadlines with high quality.
2. Good technical communication.
3. Independent and team worker (proactive).
4. Precise documentation.
5. Attention to details.
