Job Purpose / Overview
The SZC Project Team is a growing, diverse and collaborative organisation committed to engaging stakeholders, triggering development consent and preparing the project for the start of construction. The Engineering & Technical function within the Civil Works Programme (CWP) is an integral part of this project, responsible for the:
1. Definition of the design, engineering, and technical requirements.
2. Leadership of the delivery of all CWP design (from requirements definition to acceptance), including management of the Engineering & Technical budget and associated resources and supply chain to deliver the design to the CWP Delivery teams.
3. Integration of constructability requirements and design integration within the Civil Works Programme and with Site Establishment and Offsite Infrastructure.
4. Development of the business case for change associated with the L2 scope to ensure that it is sufficiently positive to justify inclusion in the SZC project baseline.
Key Responsibilities
1. Budget & Cost Management: Manage the Engineering & Technical budget within delegated authorities, ensuring financial oversight and cost control.
2. Schedule Management: Oversee the schedule for the Engineering & Technical scope, ensuring that L2 Design Schedule Milestones align with construction requirements.
3. Change Management: Administer cost and schedule changes through the SZC Change Management process, including TDF, Construction Opportunities Forum, NCC, and ROTC.
4. Cross-Team Coordination: Collaborate with Civil Works Alliance and other programmes (NI, CIBOP, SEOI) to align design delivery schedules and milestone logic.
5. Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with CWP L3 Project Managers to coordinate RD services with L3 Designer services and ensure alignment of schedules.
6. Risk Management: Identify and mitigate Engineering & Technical risks in accordance with SZC’s Risk Management Process.
7. Progress Reporting: Provide structured, informed delivery status updates as per SZC Project Reporting requirements.
8. Team Leadership: Manage Project Engineers within the assigned scope to achieve project goals effectively.
9. Contract Management: Define work scope in Task Orders, oversee delivery of contractual obligations, and manage external supplier relationships.
10. Issue Resolution: Identify and address project risks, facilitate resolution of Early Warnings, and escalate issues as necessary.
11. Quality & Compliance: Ensure compliance with project requirements, CDM regulations, and best practices.
12. Lessons Learned & Best Practices: Implement knowledge capture and lessons learned from Hinkley Point C and other relevant projects.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
1. Honours degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
2. Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE) or Chartered Project Manager (MAPM).
3. Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules, and change control processes.
4. Experience delivering complex projects in a highly regulated environment, ideally in the nuclear or heavy civil engineering sectors.
5. Strong understanding of reinforced concrete, structural steel, and UK design standards.
6. Effective stakeholder management and supplier coordination experience.
7. Knowledge of CDM Regulations and project risk management.
8. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Desirable:
1. Experience in nuclear sector projects, particularly safety-related structures and systems.
2. Knowledge of EPR design and experience.
3. Familiarity with French language and culture (advantageous but not essential).
4. Project management experience on large-scale projects (e.g., Hinkley Point C).
5. Certification in APM, PRINCE2, or equivalent project management methodologies.
