We are looking to recruit a Paediatric Health Care Support Worker to join our team. For this role, it is necessary that you are a caring and courteous individual that can work under pressure in a challenging environment. The post holder is required to work as part of the Children's Community Nurses Team in all community settings, including patient homes, special schools, and clinics.
There is a commitment to ongoing educational development of staff to meet the changing needs of Children's Nursing. The successful candidate will be offered bespoke competency-based training, Phlebotomy skills as well as NHS mandatory training relevant to your role. Support will be provided by registered nurses and experienced Home Care Support Workers so that you gain the knowledge and skills required to care for these children.
The Trust can support Health Care Support Workers to access the Nursing Associate programme.
Main duties of the job
Children's Specialist Nursing requires an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join the staff within this busy team. Our philosophy is to enhance family-centered care, working in partnership with parents, carers, and the wider multi-disciplinary team. The posts involve day-to-day participation in delivering a high quality, caring and efficient service for 0-19 year olds.
The successful candidates will be required to work across the week, both alone and as part of the team. They will be expected to liaise with other healthcare professionals and agencies in a professional manner at all times.
Experience of performing Paediatric phlebotomy by venepuncture is not essential, as training will be provided.
You must hold a full valid driving licence and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes is essential (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Job Description
Job responsibilities
* To obtain venous or capillary blood samples from children and young people.
* To label specimen bottles accurately and place samples in appropriately labelled bottles and packaging for transporting to the relevant laboratory.
* To conduct all procedures with an awareness of the child's individual needs and respecting patient confidentiality.
* To record appropriately in the patients' electronic records in accordance with trust policy.
* To approach the child with courtesy and give an age-appropriate explanation of the procedure.
* Obtain appropriate consent for the procedure being carried out.
* Recognise and respond appropriately to an emergency situation.
* When carrying out assessments, document and sign all results and inform trained nurses/clinicians of abnormal results and outcomes of assessments.
* To be responsible for highlighting and identification of child protection concerns to either the Children's Community Nursing Team Leader and Safeguarding lead at the Hertfordshire Community Trust and action concerns through child protection procedures.
* Overseeing the stores and ensuring stock levels are maintained.

Qualifications
Essential
* Good standard of general education including English and Maths to GCSE grade C or equivalent.
* Evidence of willingness to undertake relevant study.
* NVQ 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
Desirable
* First Aid, Health Care related courses.
* Previous Community Phlebotomy Experience.
Experience
Essential
* Experience in Health, Social, Education or Voluntary setting.
* Previous experience with children & young people in the community.
* Awareness of the need for confidentiality.
* Experience of caring for the child/young person with special needs.
