Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in Across East Lothian Community Hospital and REH – NHS Lothian The post will contribute a key element of the mental health service offer to the citizens of East Lothian. The service operates a continuity model, providing continuity of medical care across acute inpatient, intensive home treatment and community mental health services. The service currently organizes itself across geographical areas allocated to a CPN Team and named Consultant. Recent investment is resulting in substantial growth of the mental health service across East Lothian, predominantly the community psychiatric nursing workforce, but also the Medical Team. An element of this, in line with the ambitions of the extant Scottish Mental Health Strategy 2017-2027, is the ambition to in reach from secondary to primary care, enabling patient flow and supporting a recovery model. This post will inform the shape and delivery of forward-facing services, focused on building resilience, supporting rehabilitation and enabling recovery. The acute inpatient facility provided from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital is dedicated for patients from both Midlothian and East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnerships (HSCPs). The medical responsibility for East Lothian patients is provided by the 3.5 East Lothian (EL) general adult consultants. Inpatient reviews take place twice weekly and cross covering arrangements exist for other times. The post holder will have 9 clinical sessions allocated to working in the EL Adult MH sense and 1 SPA. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and cover for colleagues during absence in line with the National Terms and Conditions. All patients admitted into REH or taken on to IHTT case load are reviewed by a senior member of medical staff within 24 hours. The senior team has been inflated by 0.6 WTE Specialty Doctor in General Adult Psychiatry to support this standard. The responsibility for medical input and supervision of IHTT, supporting the Nurse Clinical Lead is shared with other EL General Adult consultants. Outpatient Clinics are currently held in a variety of settings throughout the county, with weekly multi-disciplinary community team meetings held in partnership with CPN’s, Occupational Therapy and Social Work colleagues. Supervision of junior medical staff, in line with recently amended guidelines, is a fundamental requirement of the job plan. The post holder must either already hold Approved Medical Practitioner status under Section 22 status of the Mental Health (Care & Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 or be in a position to undergo relevant appropriate training to become an AMP immediately upon taking up post. The entire Mental Health Service, i.e., Medical Team, IHTT and CMHT, plus our Psychiatry of Old Age Service is located at East Lothian Community Hospital. Secretarial, medical record keeping, and other administrative support is based alongside the Medical Team. The post holder will be expected to participate in numerous administrative tasks and managerial responsibilities that are shared between the consultants, e.g., co-ordination of medical student teaching, representation of psychiatry on local committees and representation of East Lothian on regional committees, new referral allocation meetings. The post holder will be required to comply with NHS Lothian policy and RCoP standards of record keeping in accordance with good professional practice and to undertake such correspondence and administrative duties as required. The post holder will also be required to communicate and liaise effectively with a wide range of colleagues including general practitioners, hospital medical staff, and the full multi-disciplinary workforce across Heath and Social Care, in connection with achieving optimal care, treatment and wellbeing of patient.
