The post-holder will be part of an innovative research team led by Professor Mariya Moosajee, Professor of Molecular Ophthalmology at UCL and Consultant Ophthalmologist in the Genetic Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The principle aim for this post will be to facilitate research in Stargardt disease. The individual will be involved in the detailed phenotyping of patients with ABCA4 retinopathy to identify suitable participants for the clinical trial and establish the natural history. They will also see the recruited trial patients at their screening, baseline and follow-up visits. He/she will have the opportunity to publish scientific papers, and potentially register for a higher degree such as a PhD at UCL with full academic support. In addition, the post-holder will also have exposure to genetic eye disease clinics (both paediatric and adult) during their placement. He/she will acquire expertise in the use and interpretation of a range of psychophysical assessments including microperimetry and detailed colour vision assessments, and imaging studies including fundus photography, autofluorescence imaging, and high-resolution optical coherence tomography. Whilst experience in some of these techniques would be an advantage, full training will be provided where necessary, so candidates lacking direct experience in these areas but having the necessary background skills and showing technical aptitude are also encouraged to apply. The post-holder will be expected to: Collect genetic and clinical data (including history, examination findings, any investigations) and collate in a custom-designed database. Work collaboratively with other members of the research team and clinical Recruit and co-ordinate patients for a clinical trial Organise, maintain and analyse project data Data analysis to understand the genotype-phenotype correlations Responsibility for clinical data management and liaison with the lead investigator Participate in weekly laboratory meetings Active participation in other ongoing research projects Achieve goals, agreed in discussions with their line manager Present the results of the project in national and international meetings Prepare the results of the project for publication Perform any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post, the title of the post and its grading as requested by their line manager Undertake patient and public involvement exercises to promote the disease and the research
