Health and Safety Coordinator – Policy and Compliance
Reports to: Senior Manager Health and Safety (Policy and Assurance)
This is a 12-month fixed term position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.
Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking for their first real experience of Health and Safety in an operational environment. Whether you have just completed your qualifications or have been working in science, facilities management or engineering and looking for a change of direction, we would be interested in hearing from you.
The Crick is a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation based in central London. Dedicated to research excellence, the Crick has the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions that underpin our understanding of human health and disease. This role will immerse you in a series of projects and science across various research groups and facilities, providing opportunity to put your knowledge into practice and develop your technical understanding.
Your role will involve helping to implement systems and processes, providing team administrative support, documentation control, trend management, performance metrics, and influencing culture and behaviours to support the H&S transformation programme. This function supports cutting edge science by monitoring and advising on health, safety and regulatory compliance issues, trend analysis, and reporting. You will gain understanding of H&S legislative requirements and standards and how these are implemented, monitored, and trended.
Working and liaising with a wide range of colleagues and partners, you’ll gain insight into how the Crick carries out world-class research safely in a highly regulated world-class facility. Key responsibilities
These include but are not limited to:
* Acting as a point of contact for health and safety matters for groups and other parties on your floor.
* Providing specialist advice, support, and coordination of H&S between groups and other parties on various health, safety, and compliance topics.
* Providing effective support to the Hub Health and Safety Advisors on all aspects of health and safety work.
* Taking responsibility for specific projects and initiatives under the direction of the Health and Safety Advisors or Senior Managers of Health and Safety.
* Ensuring regular contact with Groups, STPs, F&I, and Science Ops to proactively and reactively deal with safety issues.
* Supporting the organisation and attendance of planned health and safety inspections and providing written reports.
* Ensuring that risk assessments of all activities, processes, experimental work, equipment, etc., are carried out and current.
* Being involved in investigations of accidents, incidents, and near misses, ensuring root causes are identified and appropriate measures are implemented in a timely manner.
* Coordinating and inspecting fire precaution and fire prevention measures.
* Creating and supporting the development of Health and Safety training programmes.
* Assisting in the process of contractor management and permit to work processes.
* Responding to specific requests from colleagues and partners for advice and assistance in a timely fashion.
* Assisting in the development and maintenance of written health and safety standards, systems of work, guidance, and risk assessments.
* Assisting with campaigns and initiatives for the positive promotion of health, safety, and wellbeing.
* Being a member of the Crick Emergency Response Team (ERT).
* Providing administrative support for the H&S team, including training record management, placing orders, collating accident and incident data, processing expenses, organising logistics for meetings, and maintaining the H&S intranet pages.
* Acting as a professional and friendly first point of contact for the H&S team/office.
Key experience, qualifications and competencies

Essential
* Experience in an engineering or science field or a relevant degree or equivalent and willingness to learn the application of H&S within a research-based environment.
* Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
* Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Ability to work effectively in a complex and fast-paced environment with strong problem-solving skills.
* Experience of using databases and/or spreadsheets, data analysis, and producing meaningful reports.
* Ability to act with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
* Able to work outside normal office hours where required.
Desirable
* Minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification with experience.
* Good level of experience within office administration, preferably within a Health and Safety Environment.
* Experience in Laboratory hazards and associated controls.
* Relevant membership of IOSH with the desire to progress to Graduate Membership.
* Work experience within a research/university environment.
* Experience with Workday (for Finance and HR processes).
