Reasonable Adjustment 2.0 (Early Career)
Deadline: Friday 7 March 2025 at 11.59pm
Peterborough Presents are looking for artists/creatives who identify as Deaf, Disabled or Neurodivergent (DDN) and of all creative disciplines, to apply for a new, accessible residency. The timing of this commission is critical as we aim to mark the 30-year anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act and 15-year anniversary of the Equality Act in 2025.
We are looking for Peterborough artist(s) / creative(s) who are new to professional opportunities, or those who are just starting out their career. The outcome is to create a new piece of art – this could be a small performance, exhibition, or installation, that is premiered in Autumn 2025.
There are 3 awards available.
Timeline
Closing Date for Applications – Friday 7 March 2025 at 11.59pm

Spring – Autumn 2025 – residency takes place, work created
Autumn 2025 – final work presented
The Brief
We are looking for artist(s) / creative(s) to create a new piece of creative artworks with the DDN community from Spring – Autumn 2025. The outcome of the residency is to create a new piece, performance, exhibition or installation that culminates in Autumn 2025. You will be in one of 3 early career “artists in residence”.
A residency is a type of paid opportunity for artists, where you spend some time with other people or “in residence” in a place, and use your time as inspiration for the work you are paid to make.
Whilst you are “in residence”, you will likely run some kind of activity to get information or ideas from people to help the work you make. This could be running a workshop, interviewing people, or some other kind of interactive engagement.
For this residency, you have the option to be partnered with one of our Commissioning Panel (a disability organisation), or to select your own place or people to be in residence with.
We do not have a specific project or art form in mind. Proposals must respond to the following principles:
1. Link to the theme of ‘Reasonable Adjustment’ (a reference to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995). Commissions might relate directly to this or use it as a play on words.
2. Create a programme that helps people to explore the impact of the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act for them and their community.
3. Bring voices and people together in an accessible format.
4. Bring joy and celebration and / or be activist in nature.
5. Proposals can have a creative digital focus, be hands-on, or both.
6. The residency should focus on engaging those who identify as being Deaf, Disabled or Neurodivergent. It is however not exclusive. We are keen to engage friends, family and allies.
Although we do not ask artists to know, at this stage, exactly what they wish to produce as part of this residency, we do expect the residency to lead to an output and not just be about process. By output we mean the production of an artwork, be that an exhibition of a piece of work or a performance etc.

Selection Criteria
1. Artists who identify as either, Deaf, Disabled, and / or Neurodivergent, and live in Peterborough. We will not ask you to prove this, but you will be able to have a meeting with our Access Coordinator Julie Fernanadez so we can put adjustments in place to make the residency accessible for you.
2. Artists who are passionate about using their creativity to share voices and stories of themselves and other people.
3. Artists of all disciplines including visual art, performance, installation, outdoor arts, street art, poetry, music, dance, theatre, photography, and film.
4. Artists who feel that, with support, they would be able to undertake a residency that involves interacting with other people.
Peterborough Presents is committed to championing diversity in all its forms, particularly those who are underrepresented or undersupported in the arts. We welcome the unique contributions that artists from all walks of life can bring in terms of their education, culture, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity and expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and personal beliefs and opinions.
Budget + Fees
A total of £750 will be awarded to the commissioned artists for approximately 3 days working on the project. An additional budget of up to £1000 is also available to support the materials and production of the work you make. We have additional funds to support marketing and Access.
Notes:
1. Independent artists must have their own Public Liability Insurance and be registered as self-employed. Please note: artists who are not currently registered as self-employed, but are actively seeking to become registered, can contact the Peterborough Presents team for support in this process. It is important to note that we cannot pay artists who are not registered, so if you are unsure or have any questions, please get in touch with us before you apply.
2. If you are unable to take a financial payment due to your circumstances, you are welcome to apply and we will work with you to reimburse you in a different way. Please indicate this in your application.
3. Artists must also be available to take part in reflective and evaluative discussions about their work, during and at the end of the project.
