As an Usher/Admin Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in court proceedings, providing a vital link between court users and the judiciary. You will provide excellent administrative support and customer service.

Your role
You will balance usher and administrative duties, allowing you to work where needed. You will be an essential first point of contact for all court users, with regular contact with the judiciary and assisting the administrative staff. You will meet members of the public, which may include vulnerable witnesses and their legal representatives; prepare court/hearing rooms, complete documentation, and ensure the court runs efficiently. You will also carry out general clerical work as required to support the work of HMCTS. Ushers work within a team with regular management support and are responsible for their own time.
Your skills and experience
With a friendly and approachable manner, you’ll possess strong communication skills, with the ability to assist and address court users in a clear and confident manner. You’ll have the ability to multi-task, prioritise, and organise your own time while undertaking some administrative tasks. You’re comfortable using IT, with attention to detail to ensure court documents are accurate and able to adapt to and learn new software packages. You take pride in providing help and reassurance calmly and professionally in what can sometimes be challenging situations.

These operational roles are customer-facing, requiring successful applicants to be office-based to provide HMCTS services to the public. Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible, and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part-time, flexible, and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ’s Flexible Working policy. For this role, candidates would be expected to work a minimum of 32 hours over 5 days to meet the need of the business.
The job holder must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or (when specified in Wales) Welsh.
Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites, and/or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone’s circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate(s) will be appointed to a MoJ office location, which may include their nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office. This will be discussed and agreed on the completion of pre-employment checks.
Some of MoJ’s terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.
All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.
