If so, we'd love to hear from you About the Team Special Situations, Investments and Corporate Analysis (SSICA) is a small team of around 20 people. We lead the policy development of the Industrial Strategy for HMT. Our team members come from a diverse range of backgrounds from the corporate world, public sector and beyond. Our priority is to develop all our team members to make the most of their abilities. Many in the team are focused on the Industrial Strategy. There is a mix of both policy advisors and analysts supporting this project as part of achieving the Chancellor’s growth ambitions. The analytical team, of which you will be part, also leads the Treasury’s analysis of the wider UK corporate sector. Our Special Situations colleagues are responsible for handling bespoke commercial interventions for strategically important companies, including financially distressed firms or those looking for investment. We also sponsor HMT owned arm’s length bodies (UKGI and Royal Mint) and take a strategic approach to corporate finance issues and wider management of government owned assets. Recent examples of our work have included the publication of the Industrial Strategy Green Paper, complex commercial negotiations (for example with large steel companies) and design of business energy schemes. About the Job In this role, you will: Lead and encouraging the development of high-quality analysis to inform policy thinking. Communicate analytical findings in an accessible and clear manner, both written and verbally for a range of audiences including policy advisors, senior officials, special advisors, and ministers. Proactively encouraging, building working relationships with partners across the Treasury, Government, and external bodies. Innovate the team’s analysis through bringing new insights, datasets, and novel techniques to our work. You will have the opportunity to work with many different parts of the Treasury and other government departments. Your priorities will reflect emerging policy issues across the Industrial Strategy. This means you can test and develop your analytical skills while directly influencing decision-making. Business and/or finance experience is not essential, but we encourage candidates who can demonstrate an active curiosity about this area, including those with accounting, economics, finance, or consulting backgrounds, as well as existing civil servants. We are seeking an individual who is comfortable working with a wide-ranging set of stakeholders, internal and external, making evidence-based trade-offs with limited information, and operating in an uncertain, fast-moving environment. About You The successful candidate will be able to prioritise and drive forward projects whilst balancing multiple short-term demands. You will have the ability to build and maintain effective relationships and work collaboratively to achieve shared goals. You’ll have the ability to provide clear and compelling advice, based on a robust (quantitative and qualitative) assessment of the underlying evidence, considering the risks and implications of your recommendations.
