The Charles River School seeks a Controller to support its accounting and Business Office functions. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who thrives in a culture of community, respect, excellence, and continuous improvement. The pace of the work is dynamic, fast, and fun. The position could be flexibly configured with the possibility for hybrid and/or part-time status for the right individual.
On any given day, the Controller might:
* Partner with the CFO to design and strengthen core business processes.
* Make payments to vendors and reconcile accounts.
* Be an essential resource to a vibrant community of learners, families, and CRS personnel.
Job Summary
The Controller is a collaborative accounting professional who leads the effective day-to-day accounting of the school. Responsibilities span diverse areas and include general accounting, payroll and benefits administration, accounts payable and receivable, and financial reporting.
General Accounting and Reporting
* Support accounting transactions and balance sheet reconciliations for accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense reports, payroll and benefits.
* Coordinate month-end close and reconciliations; manage close calendar and checklist; assemble backup documentation; prepare all necessary journal entries; process accruals for depreciation, amortization, and vacation.
* Provide support for the annual audit and supporting schedules. Help prepare annual tax filings for Forms 990 and MA PC, retirement plan Form 5500, employee W-2 and 1099 forms.
* Collaborate with colleagues to ensure all tuition payments, gifts, and miscellaneous income is received, deposited, and recorded.
* Prepare monthly financial reports and statements. Conduct variance analyses on budget to forecast performance. Support cash flow projections.
Internal Controls and Policies
* Help evaluate business processes, controls, systems, and compliance to maintain the integrity of the general ledger and control environment.
* Identify and effect business process improvements.
* Help select and implement systems to improve controls and document business processes.
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in accounting or finance.
* Five to seven years of related, progressively responsible experience.
* Knowledge and experience with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and non-profit fund accounting.
* Experience with general ledger functions and month/quarter-end analysis.
* Self-motivated with excellent attention to detail; proven discretion working with confidential information. MS Office Suite and Google applications.
Preferred
* A growth mindset, flexible problem solver, a responsive customer service and process improvement orientation.
* Prior supervisory experience.
* Public accounting experience is a plus.
