ROLE SUMMARY
Reporting to the Head of Design and Technical Services, the Design Manager (Healthcare) will primarily be responsible for leading and managing the design aspect of healthcare projects to ensure that all design solutions fully comply with Employer’s Requirements, Contractor’s Proposals and meet the specific requirements of healthcare regulations, standards and the needs of patients and healthcare staff. This role will require strong collaboration with design consultants healthcare professionals, our internal teams and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, from concept through to completion. In addition, the Design Manager (Healthcare) will assist in promoting the company’s healthcare capability in the UK and Ireland where it is delivering a growing portfolio of exciting healthcare projects. The role is based at 2 Ferguson Road, Lisburn. Travel within the UK and Ireland will be required from time to time.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
1. Lead the design of healthcare projects, ensuring all design solutions are in line with client requirements, regulatory standards, and best practices.
2. Provide creative and innovative input into design solutions, with a focus on enhancing patient care and employee environments, efficiency, and operational performance.
3. Ensure compliance with healthcare-specific regulations such as safety, accessibility, infection control, and functional space planning including compliance with HTMs, HBNs.
4. Oversee McAvoy healthcare design projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest design standards.
5. Prepare and manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
6. Collaborate with all stakeholders and support teams to ensure a seamless design and construction process.
7. Engage with healthcare clients, consultants, regulatory bodies, and end-users to gather input and feedback.
8. Present design proposals to stakeholders and incorporate feedback to refine and improve design solutions.
9. Act as the primary point of contact for all design-related inquiries and concerns.
10. Ensure all design work is reviewed for quality, consistency, and compliance with relevant codes and standards.
11. Identify and mitigate potential design risks early in the project lifecycle.
12. Review and ensure that all construction documents meet modular design requirements and are properly executed.
13. Provide guidance and support to design staff and ensure that best practices are adhered to.
14. Foster a collaborative and positive working environment within the design team.
15. Lead initiatives to incorporate sustainable design principles into healthcare projects.
16. Stay up to date with emerging design trends, technologies, and innovations specific to healthcare environments.
17. Ensure the creation and management of accurate design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports.
18. Produce progress reports for senior management and stakeholders, highlighting any issues or concerns with design or project progress.
19. Responsible for McAvoy employee wellbeing and maintenance of high levels of morale within the team.
20. Promote and ensure a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with SHE Policies and Procedures.
21. Work with the wider McAvoy team to effectively represent and contribute to the growth of healthcare market sector.
22. Contribute to the culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
23. Carry out other duties that are consistent with the job holder’s knowledge and skills to assist the company in achieving its goals and objectives.
This role description is intended to give the post holder an appreciation of the role envisaged for the Design Manager (Healthcare). Specific tasks and objectives will be agreed with the post holder at regular intervals.
Technical Competencies
Essential
1. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a design management role within design/manufacturing/or construction environment, with at least 3 years in healthcare design.
2. Proven track record in managing complex healthcare projects from concept through to completion.
3. Knowledge of healthcare facility regulations, safety standards, and infection control protocols including but not limited to HTMs and HMNs.
4. Strong design, technical and problem-solving skills.
5. Proficiency in design software (eg ArchiCAD, Revit, BIM).
6. BSc Architecture, Design or a related qualification.
7. Professional Membership (ARB, RIBA) are preferred.
8. Excellent project management skills, with a keen eye for detail and quality.
9. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and clients.
10. Creative, innovative and forward thinking.
11. Strong leadership and team management skills.
12. Sound understanding of client needs and commitment to delivering high quality healthcare solutions.
13. Strong literary and IT skills for formal report writing, customer and other internal and external presentations.
