Job Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity to join a new team in Product Group that will enable a step change in the ways audiences can discover, access and consume our content. This new team will provide tooling that enables editorial teams to chapterise content via a variety of approaches, from manual to fully automated.
You’ll be helping to evolve this tool to support chapter production and use as it scales across our content offering and product estate. You’ll work with teams from across the BBC to advise and assist on integrating with their products and services.

Main Responsibilities
The role of a Software Engineering Team Lead is a hybrid role; mixing expert technical knowledge with leading your team and managing your engineer's day to day and their careers. You will be responsible for managing and leading a software engineering team in the effective design, implementation and operation of BBC software products and services.
1. People: Recruit, mentor, coach and manage staff, assuring the quality of their work and professional development.
2. Environment: Create an environment in which people can be their best.
3. Technical Expertise: Working with your team and across the wider technical community to improve our software, share knowledge and improve processes / practices when developing software.
Are you the right candidate?
We’re looking for candidates with a background in software engineering, with the ability to build and nurture diverse and inclusive engineering teams. You would ideally have experience in some, but not necessarily all, of the following areas and technologies:
1. Track record of growing engineers with a focus on mentoring, coaching and development.
2. Experience of designing, building and supporting robust, large-scale applications in a fast-changing environment with rapid release cycles.
3. Experience of managing multiple technical and non-technical stakeholders in a complex, agile, matrix environment.
4. Ability to communicate complex technology solutions in a clear and coherent way to different audiences.
5. Skilled in dealing with multiple product and technical priorities with a focus on practical decision making.
Technical Skills & Experience:
1. Expertise designing, building and supporting modern Cloud based applications using Typescript/JavaScript, NodeJS and AWS.
2. Expertise in Cloud architecture and key technologies (CloudFormation, Lambda, SQS, S3).
3. Expertise in modern development tools and practices (e.g. CI/CD, DevOps, Observability, Pair Programming, TDD).
4. Expertise in choosing and applying design patterns.
5. Developing software with scale, security and reliability in mind.
Interview process
Virtual interview – approx. 90 minutes of technical and values-based questions. Interviews will be held week commencing 3rd February 2025.
