Job Summary
We are seeking a part-time Learning Officer to develop and deliver formal and informal learning and youth engagement at the Museum. Initial contract is to end March 2027, but successful delivery of the NPO programme is likely to enable the extension of this post in the next ACE funding round.
Job Description
JOB PURPOSE:
* To develop and deliver an effective cross-curricular formal and informal learning programme.
* To increase the range and number of schools and young people engaging with the museum.
* To deepen and broaden the museum's engagement with young people.
MAIN DUTIES:
* To work with the learning sector to develop and deliver formal learning and outreach programmes, including loan boxes, learning resources, and in-person talks.
* To organise and deliver the museum's informal learning and play programme, including school holiday activities and a Saturday club.
* To oversee and broaden work experience and young volunteering opportunities, including Arts Award programme and similar (e.g., Duke of Edinburgh Awards).
* To develop a youth board to work with the Museum Advisory Board and advise on various initiatives.
* To deliver youth input into the museum's EDI action plan, including decolonisation of displays.
* To manage the learning and outreach volunteers and lead the work experience programme.
* To assist with the marketing and promotion of the Museum through social media, production of printed and online materials, promotional activities, managing databases, etc.
* To lead on the evaluation of all learning-related activities and to produce reports as required for the Manager, Advisory Board, and Council.
* To be Museum Safeguarding lead within the Council's safeguarding process.
* To be a keyholder and Duty Officer at the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon as required, to include tea room, shop, and TIC.
* Any other reasonable duties as directed by the Culture Manager / Collections and Access Manager.
Job Requirements
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
* Educated to Degree standard or above, or equivalent experience in instances where these qualifications could not have been gained.
* Experience of delivering learning sessions in a museum setting.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Sound knowledge of a variety of computer systems, particularly MS Office.
* Experience of museum object handling.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
PROBLEM SOLVING, COMPLEXITY AND USE OF INITIATIVE:
* Ability to prioritise own workload.
* Ability to support and retain volunteers.
* Participation in museum's programme of temporary and permanent displays.
* Participation in the full range of museum activities including Front of House cover.
Job Responsibilities
DECISIONS, LEVEL OF ADVICE AND IMPACT:
* Part of the museum curatorial team creating and delivering museum Forward Plan.
* Creating policies, plans, and procedures relating to learning and outreach.
* Safeguarding lead for the museum.
OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:
* Responsible for Risk assessments relating to learning and outreach activities.
* Delivery of learning programme.
* Training and supervision of learning volunteers.
* Managing and working with volunteers.
* Keyholder and duty officer for the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon.
About Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon
The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is a small multidisciplinary museum with a temporary exhibitions programme, learning activities, shop, and tea room. We opened a new extension in 2019 and have just joined the Arts Council's National Portfolio. We are part of North Devon Council and offer free admission all year round.
