The Remote Engineering, Design & Robotics Team supplies bespoke remote handling equipment, tooling, inspection, and robotic systems for all aspects of remote operations and plant interventions in the nuclear industry. We cover all aspects of projects including consultancy, optioneering studies, concept design, detail design, manufacture, test, commissioning, and on-site operations.
This advertised role requires an individual to provide technical leadership within the specialist area of Remote Engineering. NNL requires a Senior Technology Manager within our team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. This individual will take the lead role for the technical delivery of specified work packages that achieve safety, functional, and business requirements. Current programmes of work include the design and development of bespoke long-reach tooling, robotic end effectors, and automated robotic systems, where NNL is required to demonstrate these systems and progress through to onsite deployment, complying with all regulations, standards, and working within or developing the required nuclear safety case.
The individual is expected to have a strong mechanical design or electrical design background and will be asked to lead complex design tasks, produce programmes of work for successful delivery of works, collaborate with team members and customers to ensure successful project delivery, produce design concepts and solutions, engage with customers/plant owners, and bring solutions to engineering challenges when they arise.
Main Responsibilities for Senior Technology Manager:
* Technically lead and direct research programmes in the specialist area of remote engineering and robotics.
* Take the role of Technical Lead and Lead Engineer for a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to deliver work programmes to time, cost, and quality.
* Work with the end users, technology providers, SMEs, and academics to technically scope new programmes of work and develop work packages to deliver end user requirements, which also satisfy regulatory requirements.
* Provide support to customers while interacting with regulatory bodies, such as the ONR and EA.
* Lead the build, installation, commissioning, and operational support of plant-based equipment.
* Lead operation and trial of test rig equipment and processes to client specifications, collating trials results, analysing data, and generating technical reports. Lead on the development of prototype equipment and processes through to supply of end products.
* Approve detailed designs, calculations, and technical documentation.
* Approve product safety-related documentation, e.g. risk assessments, method statements, operation & maintenance manuals. Ensure compliance with all legislative, regulatory, and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security, etc. applicable to the role, including those required for UKCA marking.
* Liaison with suppliers and manufacturers, initiation and progression of the procurement process including production of procurement specifications through to delivery and inspection.
* Supervision of technician and craft personnel.
Ideal Candidate for Senior Technology Manager:
* Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
* Knowledge and experience of applying the legislative and regulatory requirements relating to engineering product development projects and CE/UKCA marking.
* Proven track record of developing customer relationships and winning new customer business.
* Experience of delivering bespoke engineered and/or robotic solutions to plant/industry.
* Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
Desirable Candidate for Senior Technology Manager:
* Proven track record of integrating a range of technologies such as industrial robots, manipulator systems, end effectors, and sensors.
* Good presentation and interpersonal skills appropriate for effective performance during interactions at high level with customers and regulators.
* Previous experience of working in a highly regulated environment such as Nuclear or COMAH.
* Familiar with Engineering design practices and procedures associated with nuclear engineering projects.
