Clinical Research Fellow in Cardiac Surgery ST3+
Candidates will work as Clinical Research Fellows. They will work cooperatively with colleagues in similar roles to provide 1FTE at registrar/clinical fellow level as part of the adult cardiac surgery service (on call rota currently 1 in 6), with the remaining time allocated to research. Research time will be spent working with the Leicester Cardiac Surgery Research group based at the University of Leicester.
The candidate will be expected to undertake high quality research and will be encouraged to dedicate their time to a specific research project as part of the multidisciplinary team. It is an expectation of the appointment that the successful candidate will register with the University of Leicester to undertake a higher degree. Appropriate funding, facilities, and supervision, commensurate with the type of degree (MD or PhD) will be provided. Candidates who demonstrate aptitude will be encouraged to apply for competitive research fellowships.
This is a 12-month appointment in the first instance, with renewal conditional on evidence of satisfactory academic progression and clinical competency. For NTN trainees wishing to apply, the post has been recognised by the east Midlands Training rotation for an Out of Programme (Research) placement as part of NTN training. Applicants holding a NTN should contact their local Training Programme Director for prospective approval prior to application.
Main duties of the job

Research time will be spent working with the Leicester Cardiac Surgery Research group based at the University of Leicester and led by Professor Gavin Murphy, British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiac Surgery.
The candidate will be expected to undertake high quality research and will be encouraged to dedicate their time to a specific research project as part of the multidisciplinary team.
1. Register with the University of Leicester to undertake a higher degree (MD or PhD).
2. Apply for competitive research fellowships.
3. Occasional lectures and small group teaching for students / junior doctors.
4. Exposure to regular clinical sessions to maintain / establish skills.

Training & Qualifications
* MB BS or Equivalent.
* Full GMC Registration.
* License to practice.
* Post graduate MRCS or equivalent.
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP), or ability to obtain.
* Knowledge and competence of IT.
* MD or PhD in a relevant subject.
Experience
* General professional training as defined in Calman Regulations.
* Experience in cardiothoracic surgery.
Communication and relationship skills
* High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake research, teaching and administrative activities utilising English language materials, and to communicate effectively with staff and students.
* Clear and fluent application, written and verbal presentation.
* Willingness and aptitude to present work at international and national meetings.
* Ability to constructively interact with other members of the research group.
Analytical and Judgement skills
* Ability to plan, prioritise and work on own initiative.
* Statistical knowledge and understanding of statistical software.
* Experience of writing scientific papers.
Planning and organisation skills
* Willingness to work as a member of the team and share administrative responsibilities.
* Ability to manage own time and work effectively.
* Understanding of role and importance of management in the NHS.
* Evidence of management ability, for example in organising and leading a clinical research team.
