Overview
The ADHD Psychiatrist will be responsible for the clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The role includes developing comprehensive treatment plans, prescribing appropriate medication, and monitoring patient progress in accordance with NICE guidelines and NHS Right to Choose (RTC) frameworks.
As the Prescribing/Medicines Lead, the postholder will also oversee the safe and effective prescribing of ADHD medications within the organisation, ensuring compliance with NHS and ICB Medicines Optimisation standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Duties:
* Conduct comprehensive assessments and diagnostic evaluations for ADHD and related conditions in children, adolescents, and adults.
* Develop and implement individualised treatment plans, incorporating medication management, psychoeducation, and behavioural strategies.
* Prescribe and review ADHD medications in line with NICE, GMC, and local prescribing guidelines.
* Monitor and manage medication efficacy and side effects, making necessary adjustments to optimise treatment outcomes.
* Provide ongoing support, follow-ups, and reviews to ensure continued treatment effectiveness and patient safety.
* Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including psychologists, therapists, and nurses, to provide holistic care.
* Offer second opinions and complex case consultations as required.
2. Prescribing/Medicines Lead Responsibilities:
* Act as the designated point of contact for the ICB Medicines Optimisation Team.
* Ensure compliance with NHS England’s prescribing policies and controlled drug regulations.
* Provide oversight of prescribing audits, ensuring medication safety, governance, and adherence to best practice guidelines.
* Review and implement safe prescribing protocols for ADHD medications within the service.
* Liaise with the local ICB to ensure the organisation meets Right to Choose (RTC) accreditation standards.
* Support the training and development of clinical staff on prescribing best practices and medication safety.
* Address prescribing-related concerns, including potential misuse, dependency risks, and patient adherence issues.
* Collaborate with pharmacists and primary care teams to facilitate shared care agreements.
3. Governance & Compliance:
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring compliance with GDPR and CQC regulations.
* Participate in clinical governance activities, including incident reporting, quality assurance, and service improvement initiatives.
* Contribute to policy development related to ADHD treatment and prescribing within the organisation.
4. Professional Development & Leadership:
* Stay up to date with advancements in ADHD research, pharmacology, and treatment approaches.
* Provide mentorship and guidance to junior clinicians, trainees, and prescribing staff.
* Engage in continued professional development (CPD) and maintain GMC registration.
Person Specification:
Essential Criteria:
* Qualifications: MRCPsych or equivalent, full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in ADHD psychiatry or neurodevelopmental disorders.
* Prescribing Authority: Approved clinician status with full prescribing rights in the UK.
* Knowledge: Strong understanding of NICE guidelines, controlled drug prescribing, and ADHD treatment protocols.
* Skills: Excellent diagnostic, communication, and leadership skills.
* Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with NHS RTC processes and ICB governance structures.
Desirable Criteria:
* Additional training in psychopharmacology or ADHD coaching.
* Previous experience in a Prescribing Lead or governance role.
* Experience in shared care agreements with GPs.
* Membership in the UKAAN (UK Adult ADHD Network) or similar professional body.
