About The Role
Role purpose
To work as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide nursing and general care to children and young people aged 3 - 19 and to contribute to the effective delivery of all aspects of Health and Social Care provision within current legislation and Ambito and school policies and procedures.
Key accountabilities
General

Role specific
- To assist the Lead Nurse with the organisation of the Nursing Team at Craig Y Parc.
- To process the assessment and interpretation of information regarding children and young people health needs and take the appropriate actions.
- To provide skilled nursing care and undertake clinical procedures as required.For example, catheterisation, naso-gastric tubes, oxygen therapy and suction, management of PEG and tracheostomy.
- To ensure the wellbeing of children and young people within the service.
- To ensure safe and effective practice by adhering to statutory guidance for practice requirements and standards.
- To ensure the promotion of evidence-based practice by reviewing and monitoring standards of care in line with local and national guidance.
- To promote and maintain systems and processes to ensure effective communication and continuity of customer care, liaising with multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and community teams as required.
- To participate in effective channels of communication within the nursing team and wider residential/school staff.
- To assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment by ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, procedures and protocols regarding: infection prevention and control; health and safety; risk assessment; and incident/accident reporting.
- To assist with the analysis, assessment and management of actual and potential risks to health and well-being.
- To assist with the effective planning and co-ordination of care, including: health surveillance; health promotion; safe and smooth transfer to other settings.
- Maintain effective, appropriate communication with parents/guardians.
- To provide information and where possible deliver training to enable staff to gain knowledge and understanding of students individual/personal care needs. Supervise staff on a daily basis on their competency and understanding to maintain a high standard of practice.
- To participate in and contribute to team meetings.
- Implement all aspects of medicines management related activities in accordance with Ambito and Craig y Parc medicine policy to ensure the safe, legal and appropriate use of medicines and to ensure that drugs are ordered and stored in accordance with these regulations.
- To be responsible for the maintenance and administration of medical equipment, i.e. oxygen, suction, nebulizers, resuscitation sets and instructing members of staff on how and when to use them.
- To maintain supplies of medical equipment.
- To maintain timely and accurate record keeping and where appropriate in accordance with professional guidelines.
- Participate in the management of nursing and emergency situations whilst on duty. Ensure that relevant emergency plans are in place and appropriate action is taken and reviewed following any medical emergency.
- To undertake and support with the organisation of clinics and specialist visits with the collaboration of appropriate staff.
- Attend all mandatory and essential training and ensure that clinical practice remains evidence-based and up to date.
- Where appropriate contribute to the development of Ambito’s policies, procedures, protocols and strategies.
- Ensure appropriate delegation to staff across the service, monitoring outcomes of safe and effective care and service delivery.
- Challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below expectation.
- Maintain skills and competencies regarding safeguarding of children and young people, and act in the best interests to alert and inform appropriate personnel if it is suspected that a child / young adult is at risk or has been abused.
- To work within the NMC Guidelines relating to code of professional conduct.
- To understand and respect the need for confidentiality at all times.
- Adhere to the Data Protection Act (1998).
- Any other reasonable duties that may be required at the discretion of the Lead Nurse or Principal to support the day to day running of the school.
