What our Nurses say about working at CHSW
We have time to care and time with the opportunity to grow, to nurture, to support and learn.
I thought the hospice was going to be all end-of-life care, but as well as end-of-life and bereavement care, it is also about getting to know the family and supporting them on their journey, long or short, and having the time to do that. As a nurse, there's not many jobs where you are able to spend quality time with a family. It is a real privilege.
Job responsibilities
CHSW delivers services to children and their families who have a palliative care need and meet the agreed referral criteria. The CHSW ethos is to support the whole family, and our delivery model includes care wherever the child is when they need it most, including at the hospice base, at home, and virtual support.
The Registered Nurse will work as part of the multidisciplinary care team, working under the leadership of the Care Team Leaders (TL) to provide direct care and support to children and their families.
Major Tasks (not exhaustive):
* Ensure the care provided to children and families is highly personalized and of the highest quality.
* Foster a warm, welcoming, and caring environment that is informal in nature while upholding the highest standards of care, offering support tailored to the individual needs of each referred child and their family.
* Provide holistic nursing care (physical, emotional, social, and spiritual) for children and family members. This may include feeding, washing, play, specific medical/nursing care, listening/supporting, providing information, and caring for the child wherever they are located. Activities should reflect their wishes/outcomes and support therapeutic spaces, resilience, and full potential.
* Provide clinical care wherever the child is, including in the hospice, at home, and virtually. This includes home visits, community care, end-of-life care, assessments, referrals, care plan meetings, and MDT meetings.
* Respect parents, work in partnership with them in the child's care, and proactively engage with families staying at the hospice to ensure satisfaction and responsiveness to their needs.
* Engage positively with children and families, ensuring the child's voice is central to all decisions, and measure care against standards set by the CQC and other external bodies.
* The clinical skills required include medication management, IV infusions, seizure management, clinical assessment, tube feeding, effective suctioning, tracheostomy care, ventilation, tissue viability, IPC, and moving & handling.
* Promote the ethos and quality standards of CHSW, ensuring a safe and professional service at all times.
* Support ongoing compliance evidence assessments and engage with improvement plans for CQC readiness.
