Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse Intensive Care Unit

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:
* The post holder is responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for critically ill adults in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team. They will act as an effective clinical role model.
* The post holder will use specialist knowledge obtained through relevant post registration courses in caring for critically ill adults.
* To maintain a safe clinical environment conducive to patient care.
* Develop leadership skills and experience in the management within the Intensive Care Unit.
* To promote and participate in the implementation of the RUH Nursing strategy.
* Developing and implementing Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives.
* Reviewing nursing practice and implementing appropriate changes based on research/best practice.
* Participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate, and to teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to nursing or non-nursing staff.
To be designated to manage the Intensive Care Unit and/or act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility. To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the ward/department.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to work clinically within the multidisciplinary team, maintain high standards of practice while supporting staff on a shift by shift basis and provide clinical leadership and decision making.
The post holder will be required to be an enthusiastic and integral member of our established and committed team, providing and supervising the delivery of excellent patient care. The candidate will provide effective clinical leadership and management of the team in the Intensive Care Unit and demonstrate the ability to manage their time by prioritising and organising their work. They must demonstrate current personal development; have a good understanding and involvement in improving patient safety, risk reduction, and development of others and general support for peers, junior and senior colleagues.

Specific skills
* Demonstrates ability to lead and develop a designated team of people.

Qualifications
* Current registration with NMC.
* Evidence of significant post registration study specifically related to Intensive Care.
* Registered nurse with extensive critical care nursing experience.
* Evidence of completion of Step 1,2 and 3 national competency framework for adult critical care nurses.
* Management and leadership training.
* ILS/ALS certification.
* Paediatric critical care qualification and clinical experience or willingness to undertake relevant study.
* Completion of Step 4 national competency framework for adult critical care nurses.
Skills
* Significant experience within critical care setting.
* Demonstrates an insight into management issues.
* Demonstrates experience of taking charge and delegating duties within the speciality.
* Understanding of the basic principles of effective budgetary management.
