Responsibilities
Position Summary
The role of the Patient Care Support (PCS) Companion is to provide a several support services including constant safety observation of a patient and in-hospital patient transport. The main objective for a Patient Care Support Companion is to ensure safety in all observation and transportation capacities. A PCS is necessary for patients identified to be at risk for causing unintentional injury to him/herself or interfering with his/her care as well as the physical moving of patients from one location in the hospital to another. Patients requiring a Care Companion & Transport could be confused, experiencing symptoms of drug/alcohol withdrawal, at a high risk for falling or at risk for elopement. The PCS will strive to provide the most exceptional service and experience possible, particularly in challenging situations.
The Patient Observer & Transport functions under the direction of the hospital management that assign observations and patient relocations as necessary. Nursing care is provided to the patient by nursing staff.
Responsibilities
Observer
1. Performs patient observation and transport as assigned
2. Documents patients behavior using the appropriate form/tool
3. Obtains appropriate information at the start of the shift in regard to care from Registered Nurse
4. Patient conversation guidelines should be adhered to
5. Monitors the safety of the patient and maintains safe environment as directed by the registered nurse for ex: maintains safety position in room when appropriate. (., back to door) and keeps patients in sight at all times.
6. Monitors patient for escalating behavior.
7. Accompanies the patient to the bathroom and testing as needed.
8. Demonstrates proficiency with the use of bed alarms.
9. Patient's clothing and belongings will be placed in the patient’s closet away from the patient.
10. Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
11. Observes and reports patient's status and needs to nurse.
12. Remains on duty until relieved by oncoming coverage or Nurse discontinues coverage.
Transport
13. Interact with the patient to ensure that departure from the room is smooth and comfortable.
14. Ensure that patients pay the parking fee for valet vehicles.
15. Interact with patient and valet staff to ensure the patient has a smooth transition to the vehicle.
The Observer & Transport may potentially watch patients that are at risk for suicide
Qualifications
Years of Experience: Entry Level
Language Skills: Proficient in English both verbally and written

(., Code Green, Code Red)Performs proper handwashing per CDC guidelines.Utilizes Chain of Command to communicate any identified patient or staff safety risks.Reports patient status to oncoming staff in respectful, professional manner.Is able to access payroll and manage personal clocking and calendar in Time PC Application.
