We are looking to recruit a dynamic nurse or ODP with excellent clinical skills, to deliver a high-quality service to patients attending the pre-operative assessment unit. The successful applicant will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual with significant post-registration clinical experience within the area of pre-operative assessment or equivalent general adult surgical experience. Applicants will need to have a clear understanding of nursing quality and be able to assure excellence in clinical care. A teaching, assessing and mentorship in clinical practice certificate or equivalent is essential. The ability to work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential, together with excellent communication skills.
Main duties of the job
1. Assess patients' suitability and fitness for surgery using clinical examination skills and agreed protocols to take a targeted history of the patient.
2. Conduct assessment of both the medical and psychological status of elective surgical patients, including performing physical assessments as required.
3. Order and perform diagnostic tests within set protocols and work to agreed actions where abnormalities are discovered to ensure all test results are available for the day of surgery.
4. Refer patients who fall outside the agreed criteria to an anaesthetist, and refer patients back to primary care or another healthcare professional to optimise their medical condition.
5. Provide information about the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative process, ensuring the patient understands the proposed procedure and any specific preoperative instructions.
6. Communicate effectively and liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team and primary care team as appropriate.
Job responsibilities
1. Provide care and emotional support to patients and their relatives who are planned admissions for surgical procedures.
2. Manage a template of patient caseload in the holistic pre-operative assessment setting.
3. Recognise and organise individual patient care needs, managing own workload and prioritising care.
4. Ensure the admission process is comprehensive, concise, and valid, and that the planned admission for surgery is within set protocols.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Current NMC part 1 registration (Adult) / degree or diploma in operating department practice.
* Evidence of professional development.
* Clinical examination skills (degree or diploma level) highly desirable.
* Competence in venepuncture and ECG recording and interpretation.
Knowledge and Experience
* Significant post-registration experience in an acute surgical setting (Theatre/Anaesthetics/Wards).
* Teaching or Mentorship experience.
* Require excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Flexible to the needs of the service.
* Experience of handling a caseload of patients.
* Previous pre-op experience.
* Experience of taking a clinical history from patients.
