The Role
To lead, manage and develop the engineering team to provide a responsive, professional and quality aware engineering maintenance service. Ensure maximum operational effectiveness from equipment and facilities, through the introduction of new systems and procedures which will improve the competitiveness of the company and ensure a physical environment fit for manufacturing quality food products in compliance with current health & safety legislation.
Reporting to the Site Head of Engineering, the jobholder will need to balance team management with a hands-on practical approach to engineering issues on site. The role will work across engineering stores and administration.
Duties Include:
1. Maintaining and developing the building, environment and plant to ensure a safe working environment for all staff and visitors. This will include the heating, ventilation, fire protection equipment, pipework & plumbing, alarm systems, and security systems.
2. Leading and managing the engineering technical support function, including:
1. Grievances & disciplinaries
2. Attendance management (including holiday authorisation)
3. Data input on staff attendance system
4. Training and development
5. Cover arrangements for weekends, holidays and other absences
6. All other people management issues
3. Developing and coaching the engineering technical support team to encourage flexibility and cross functional skills. Instilling a 'fix it right first time' attitude.
4. Improving efficiencies and costs of equipment maintenance to agreed levels through targeted analysis, development and delivery of performance improvement plans.
5. Developing a planned preventative maintenance culture using KPIs, customer service levels, detailed planned and preventative maintenance schedules and condition monitoring techniques.
6. Timely, accurate and supportive communications between shifts.
7. Assisting with the production of the annual budgets (revenue and capital) and monitoring spend.
8. Establishing agreements with key suppliers and contractors. This will include identification of appropriate providers, feasibility studies, arranging insurance and ensuring best practice on site.
9. Ensuring all statutory inspections (including portable appliance testing, mains testing and pressure vessels) are managed and records are maintained in line with current legislation. Developing and applying routine and regular maintenance plans as required.

16. Identifying opportunities for energy saving and ensuring these are embraced site-wide.
17. Other responsibilities as reasonably requested in support of the Head of Engineering.
18. Ensuring the health and safety of all staff members, through strict adherence to Health and Safety procedures and providing support and assistance to the Chargehands in completing their Health and Safety responsibilities. Skills & Experience Required:
* Some refrigeration experience would be an advantage.
* Mechanical and electrical engineering qualifications and experience.
* Proven track record of success in managing a team.
* Ability to balance team management responsibilities with hands-on practical tasks.
* Strong organisational skills with an ability to balance a varied workload and re-prioritise in response to changing business needs and unexpected engineering problems.
* Experience of working within a fast-moving pressurized manufacturing environment.
* Evidence of troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.
* Must be driven and enthusiastic with a passion for engineering maintenance. Highly professional and able to deal with issues unaided.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to build excellent working relationships.
