About the Role
Education Welfare Officers represent the Local Authority Education Welfare and EOTAS Service by means of supporting schools and families to address matters in relation to irregular school attendance. They work effectively to promote school age children’s entitlement to receiving an appropriate education at school or otherwise. Including those children electively home educated. Children missing from education and those children, who are unable to attend full time due to illness or other conditions to support improved educational outcomes by improving attendance, reducing absence and addressing concerns identified. Education Welfare Officers fulfil enquiries in relation to Child Employment and Entertainment and Chaperone applications.
1. Undertake initial enquiries in relation to part time timetables
2. Be the first point of contact for asylum seekers seeking access to school education
3. Complete and work closely with Education to follow up on school applications for asylum seekers in initial and dispersal accommodation
4. Support families with bus pass applications
5. Support families with gaining access to free school meals
6. Liaise with schools, NCC Education Team and Charities regarding accessing school uniforms for asylum seekers
7. Refer individuals/families to Family Information Services for free nursery places
8. Complete safeguarding referrals where appropriate
9. Make referrals into other teams supporting asylum seekers. Transient Health Team or Midwifery Team where applicable
10. Attend and provide updates at relevant asylum seeker meetings with the Asylum & Resettlement Team (. Hotel Meeting, Safeguarding Meeting & MAF).
11. Set up regular accessible drop-in’s
12. Signpost to other relevant services.
13. Provide interpreting support where required
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
14. The knowledge, experience and confidence in Education Welfare and Education Other Than at School (EOTAS) policy and practice to provide consistent support service to schools, children and families.
15. Identify, in conjunction with school staff, those pupils with school attendance problems. To investigate and assess such cases using the Standard Operating process.
16. Plan and initiate appropriate action in line with Service procedures.
17. Maintain accurate electronic case files regarding actions and interventions in line with Service policy & Procedure.
18. Prepare court Statements and reports as required and be available to attend the Magistrates’ Court as a witness when called
19. Safeguard the general welfare of children by working with schools and relevant support agencies to promote a positive home/school relationship and strictly adhere to LA procedures regarding the safeguarding and protection of children and young people.
20. To undertake full casework, to include home visits.
21. To conduct Parent Meetings
22. Undertake initial enquiries in relation to child employment and entertainment
