The University of Bolton is a high-achieving, dynamic institution set within the inclusive and engaged community of Greater Manchester. One of the most successful new universities of recent years with accolades for inclusivity, contribution to the community, and teaching quality, the University was recently ranked 30th in the UK in the 2024 Guardian University Guide. Within this context, the University is creating a new undergraduate School of Medicine, as part of its existing Institute of Medicine, and adjacent to the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing. The Institute of Medicine is home to postgraduate programmes and CPD training for healthcare and research centres, including the Centre for Excellence in Safety of Older People and the Centre for Remediation Support & Training.
The University now seeks to appoint an outstanding medical professional to fill the role of Dean of the School of Medicine. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead the next phase of its development. The Dean will provide the strategic, academic, and operational leadership necessary to deliver the vision, design, and implementation of the new School, embedding an outstanding undergraduate education and experience and fostering links within the wider University and NHS partners. The School will follow curricula developed by the University of Leicester. The Dean will be responsible for overseeing and instituting an ambitious strategy that will allow the School to welcome its first cohort of students in 2025, pending approval by the General Medical Council.
The successful candidate will be an established leader with a deep understanding of the strategic imperatives of a contemporary medical school, an enthusiasm for the goals and vision of Bolton, and a passion for medical education. They will be a dynamic and inspiring individual with a collaborative approach, who values the emphasis on learning and discovery at the University of Bolton, who brings a strong personal commitment to inclusive education and widening access, and who can demonstrate a proven track record of effective senior leadership. In addition, the Dean should bring a mindset of collaboration to form integral partnerships with the local NHS trusts, and regional hospitals, as part of the network engaging with the medical school to develop interprofessional medical and health education at the University of Bolton.
The University of Bolton is committed to providing a vibrant, ethical, and sustainable working environment that values equality and diversity. We strongly encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply for this role.
