Job overview
This is an exciting time for intensive care as the service continues to develop. We are currently seeking energetic, enthusiastic and passionate staff nurses who are keen to develop to join our BHT Intensive care team, based at Wycombe Hospital ICU. The successful post holder will be expected to work across site on a regular basis at the ICU based in Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
The post holder will be a member of the nursing team caring for critically ill patients in a highly complex environment. He/she is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of the individualised care offered to patients and their families. The staff nurse is expected to deliver essential nursing care without direct supervision. With decreasing levels of supervision the staff nurse will carry out effective assessment of the needs of the critically ill patient and plan, deliver and evaluate the care required. Post Foundation Gateway staff nurses will supervise junior nurses, support staff and students.
Main duties of the job
* Acts at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice.
* Ensure planned nursing care is delivered safely and effectively, respecting the views, culture and beliefs of the patient and their family.
* Recognises situations that are beyond the scope of own competence and informs the shift leader or doctor promptly.
* Conducts a comprehensive assessment of the patient at the beginning of each shift and devises an individual plan of care for evaluation throughout the day.
* Participate in a competency based training programme to develop the specialist nursing practice skills required to manage a critically ill patient. For example: Care Planning, Physical assessment skills, Care of the ventilated patient, Managing complex drugs and infusions, Preparing and administering intravenous drugs, Utilising haemodynamic monitoring tools & Renal support.
* Cares for dying patients and their families with sensitivity, providing information and support.
* Be involved in the organ donation process as appropriate.

Person specification
Education & Qualifications
* Pre Foundation Year - Registered Nurse (General)
* Experienced nurses - Mentoring and assessing course
* Experienced nurses - Accredited Critical Care Course
Experience
* Previous experience in an acute ward of a NHS hospital
* Ability to work within a team and independently
* Previous experience in ITU an advantage but not essential
* Previous experience of teaching students, HCAs and qualified staff would be an advantage
Skills & Knowledge
* Good communication skills: written and verbal and in English
* Ability to work all shifts including night duty.
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
* Able to work across both acute sites
* Ability to work all shifts including weekends and night duty across both ICUs
