Role
You’ll be responsible for all aspects of the real-time Control, Operation and Outage Planning of the SP Energy Networks Distribution network. This involves the management of safety, system integrity, Customer Service and co-ordination of system access while ensuring compliance with both Distribution and Transmission licences. An integral part of this will involve mentoring and coaching team members and developing and encouraging a strong team culture.
Responsible for minimising risk to the Transmission and Distribution networks by co-ordinating activities with the Distribution district management teams to ensure all planned and unplanned work is completed timeously, cost effectively and with the correct priorities. Responsible for ensuring the Control Room delivers the highest levels in Safety Compliance & Customer Service in line with SPEN strategic goals.
Responsible for the development of policies and strategies associated with system restoration activities. This will involve engaging and working closely with other parts of the SPEN, and external bodies such as HSE, DESNZ, OFGEM, NGET and other DNO’s. Representing SPD interests in Government led Industry Groups.
As part of the Customer Service team you will be responsible for contributing and developing of Control Room Emergency Planning and Business Continuity development and execution. Responsible for ensuring SPD is in a state of readiness during periods of increased network risk due to severe weather or system events.
Responsible for ensuring SPD is in a state of readiness to act on Government or Grid instructions to implement emergency protocols.
Responsible for ensuring the Control Room has an agreed viable Power Outage ESRS plan to restore the SPD network and associated 2 million + customers in the event a total GB shutdown.
What you'll be doing
1. Develop an integrated shift operations team by bringing together Control, Despatch, Incident Management, Customer Service and administration Support.
2. Assist in the development and delivery of the annual Operating Plan, which is consistent with the delivery of operational excellence goals.
3. Ensure an appropriate structure of resource availability is in place to achieve the goals identified in the Operating Plan.
4. Encourage and promote a safety culture and ensure that all Safety Legislation is implemented on all activities associated with the shift team.
5. Manage the HV and LV operational interfaces between the Operational Planning, Incident Management, DCC, District and other departments within SPEN (Scotland) and external parts of the business.
6. Manage customer service proactively and reactively as appropriate, to meet all customer service KPI’s.
7. Carry out regular Strategic Reviews for the Control Room Operation to ensure business readiness for Regulatory changes and skills are in place to operate and manage emerging technologies such as HVDC & DSO and FES.
8. Duty Manager and Emergency Planning management roles as required.
9. Actively participate in business and organisational change such that the performance, productivity and service standards of the Operations business are maintained and/or improved.
10. Ensure Performance Management process is delivered within Team.
11. Manage the operational interface between the OCC and DCC to ensure associated targets are delivered.
12. Manage the operational interface with NGET to optimise the security of supplies to our end customers.
13. Take the lead to ensure the Control Room maximises the Regulatory financial rewards available from ENS, IIS & BMCS. Introduce initiatives that drive further benefit and financial reward culturally, technically and by improved processes.
14. Coach and develop the teams to ensure business objectives are met.
15. Contribute as an effective member of the Customer Service Management team.
16. Take a lead with the Business in the delivery of new processes and technologies.
17. The post holder will have a requirement to respond to several different challenges in this role. The accountabilities are varied, and a degree of knowledge is required in each area to ensure effectiveness.
18. Lead the Distribution activities of the Control Room and planning teams with openness, honesty and integrity and strive to maximise productivity within the team, thus reducing the operational cost of the business.
19. Deliver full balance of activities, considering overall Energy Networks objectives and strategic goals.
20. Able to make balanced decisions, considering all possible information available, able to consult with others when applicable and anticipate / recognise possible outcomes.
21. Able and confident to make own decisions and be confident to seek appropriate input from supervisors, peers and subordinates.
22. Management of risk control framework and formulation of risk management strategy.
23. Coach, develop & mentor staff ensuring appropriate training programmes are in place.

14. Good organisation and time management skills.
15. An effective and confident verbal and written communicator.
16. Ensure an appropriate structure of resource availability is in place to achieve the goals identified in the Operating Plan.
17. Working knowledge of company code of conduct, disciplinary procedures and other HR guidance documentation.
18. Expert knowledge of company Health & Safety requirements and compliance.
19. Expert Knowledge of the incentives arrangement surrounding TO and DNO activities.
Minimum Requirement
* Engineering qualification (BSc/Beng/HNC)
* Electrical Network / Control Room experience (advantageous)
* Operational experience within relevant sector/industry
