As a Fabric & Building Maintenance Engineer at Sodexo, based at Merville Barracks, Circular Road South, Colchester, Essex CO2 7UT, you will play a key role in maintaining the building fabric, carpentry, and associated tasks across the Colchester Garrison. This extensive 185-hectare site, which includes 150 diverse buildings ranging from accommodation to maintenance facilities, offers a dynamic and varied work environment—no two days will be the same!
You will be responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), remedial work, and installations, ensuring all client requests are completed efficiently and to the highest standard. As this is a client-facing role, you will interact regularly with Armed Forces personnel, contributing to the overall quality of life for those you serve. Your dedication to excellent customer service and your expertise in building maintenance will make a real difference across the site.
What you’ll do:
1. Carry out reactive maintenance across 100+ buildings within the pre-determined timeframes.
2. Complete work and documentation to the required standard on a timely basis.
3. Build good relationships with clients, sub-contractors, and other Sodexo team members.
4. Have a proactive approach in identifying and resolving issues leading to the reduction in reactive calls.
5. Take responsibility for the health & safety of self and others following Sodexo policies and procedures.
6. Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships both internally and externally to Sodexo.
7. Deliver service excellence and outstanding customer service.
8. Perform basic carpentry, kitchen fitting, fabric repairs, carpet tiles, ceiling tiles, painting & decorating.
9. Conduct ironmongery repairs/replacements.
10. Perform DGU replacements and other glass replacements.
11. Participate in Sodexo out of hours emergency service.
What you bring:
1. People-friendly, customer service skills are essential.
2. Held a full UK Driving license for 3 years or more.
3. Able to work within a team environment.
4. Good communication skills.
5. Ability to work on own initiative and innovate to continually develop skills.
6. Fully qualified carpenter accredited with City & Guilds or relevant experience.
7. Good verbal, numerate, interpersonal, and computer skills.
8. Knowledge of fire doors would be advantageous.
9. Plumbing knowledge would be advantageous but not essential.
