This post is part the Estate Engineering Team, who work closely with a large range of suppliers and internal staff to provide technical guidance and to ensure that the university mechanical and electrical infrastructures are compliant & maintained to a high standard across an estate comprising Tutorial, Commercial and Student Residence spaces.
About the Role
The BeMS Manager will take ownership of the Building and Energy Management System (BeMS) across the University of Derby’s portfolio to ensure a positive student experience whilst allowing the best possible energy efficiencies.
This role will be working within a small but highly skilled team of engineers, The candidate will monitor the BeMS and EcoStruxure BA software to identify issues on our heating, ventilation & Air Conditioning systems (HVAC) and escalating these to the appropriate stakeholder for remedial action.
This role will be primary based from the Kedleston Road Campus but will require travel between sites. There will be no direct reports, however the candidate will work closely with our internal maintenance team and our contractors to both maintain and improve the BeMS system and investigate possible enhancement that can realise maximum benefits for the University of Derby.
The job holder will also be responsible for ensuring that the new building developments are integrated and developed as “smart buildings” linking the BeMS system with other systems across the UoD.
The core duties will include:
Monitoring the BeMS and EcoStruxure BA software to ensure correct operation and identify issues with the associated HVAC equipment and the BeMS system.
Work with the estates team and our CAFM system to create; assign and manage remedial actions for HVAC and BeMS related issues.
Contract management of the BeMS Supplier (Schneider) to ensure maintenance, remedial and enhancement works are completed safely and to UoD Standards.
Manager the building schedule in line with UoD requirements to optimise the efficient of the building services systems
Work with the engineering manager, the development team and other UoD stakeholders to provide project management for modification, small works and commissioning of the BMS system
The onboarding of the BeMS system for all new building developments to ensure a ‘soft landings’ approach and Provide high-level BMS user training to estates engineering and maintenance departments.
The candidate will receive familiarisation training on the operation and use of UoD BeMS and EcoStruxure BA software as well as complete authorised person training and act as an authorised person for the issuing of high-risk permit to work (working at heights, confined spaces, asbestos).
This role is part of the Estates department out of hours rota, providing a first response to urgent estates related issues, which occur outside the normal operating hours. On call rates will apply and be discussed at interview.

About You
The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge on the operating of Building & Energy management systems and be able to give recent examples of where and how this has been applied. They will be responsible for realizing maximum benefits and allow the best possible energy efficiencies for plant equipment across the portfolio.
The job will require a good understanding of a wide variety of building service system and the controls that integrated the BMS across the entire estates management portfolio, therefor we are asking the candidate to hold a building services engineering degree (CIBSE Approved) or equivalent relevant qualification in a building service-related subject, (Building services / electrical / mechanical) OR Extensive equivalent experience in the building services / Building Management System sector.
The candidate will be able to confidently manage contractors and fully understand the safe systems of work required in the facilities management sector is an essential requirement with supporting health and safety management qualifications preferred. They will have experience working in higher education environments across a large estate providing maintenance in residential, commercial and industrial premise.
The role requires somebody who can work both independently, as well as a part of a team to ensure works are seen through to completion. They will be self-motivated; be able to prioritise their own workloads and be able to display excellent communication, organisational, IT and project management skills.
A customer service ethos which matches the University’s values and behaviours is essential; outstanding communication, persuasion and influencing skills are a must, as is a drive for continuous improvement and a determination for excellence.
You will demonstrate an ability and genuine interest in keeping abreast of the external environment with regards to relevant BeMS / Building Services industry and higher education developments.
