Position Description
The Shift Leader ensures that all aspects of front-line operations are completed to schedule, and in compliance with EHS and Quality requirements. In addition, the Shift Leader will identify opportunities for, and implement actions to achieve, continuous improvement in their area of responsibility. They will also act as a coach to the operations team and provide support to ensure the operators can carry out their role effectively. The Shift Leader will have a full understanding of the high-level manufacturing processes including applicable EHS and Quality aspects.
Functions, Duties, Tasks:
1. To lead and ensure ‘right first time’ execution of primary loop activities associated with maintenance of EHS and Quality standards. This includes:
1. Daily check of logs and BPRs to ensure no errors
2. Maintaining own Learning Plan and supporting operators to ensure zero overdue training
3. Ensuring PTW/SSOW processes are followed for the facility
4. Carrying out active monitoring to ensure EHS and Quality standards are being maintained
5. Delivering baseline EHS and Quality training for the area
6. Own and/or ensure operational input into document reviews (SOPs, risk assessments, etc)
7. Closure of all area maintenance work orders in a timely manner
8. Carrying out designated emergency response role as defined in the Site Emergency Response Plan
9. Plan and execute activities to enable the manufacturing process and downstream areas (QCL, QA) to run to schedule
10. Check BPRs/material management system to ensure no errors
11. Liaise with maintenance on a daily and weekly basis to plan and execute engineering activities
12. Arrange operator shift cover
13. Provide/ensure input into improvement projects
14. Raise work orders as required
15. Execute effective shutdown/changeover planning
16. Agree and communicate priorities on a shift-to-shift basis
17. Lead and ensure operator involvement in problem solving activities
18. Lead troubleshooting of plant issues, escalating to, and liaising with, functions as required
19. Raise Electronic Deviation Management System events for significant EHS and Quality incidents, and carry out initial investigation/data gathering
20. Carry out frequent Gemba walks to understand shop floor activities, to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and to coach employees
21. Ensure effective communication between shifts, and with the Process Team and area leadership
22. Ensure operator shift logs are maintained to a high standard providing all necessary information for incoming shifts, supervision and the Process Team
23. As requested, escort visitors around the facility
24. Escalate any issues to the Process Team and area leadership
25. Deliver Team/Site comms to shift group as required
26. Manage, coach and develop members of the operations team
27. Through the performance management process, ensure all members of the operations team have clear objectives, agreed development plan and that progress is tracked through regular 1:1s and formal check-ins
28. Act as a coach to develop operators’ skills
29. Support PTs and operators in arranging training as required
30. Carry out role confirmation to ensure Process Technician and operators are effectively carrying out their roles and supporting to close gaps
31. Manage ProTime, OTS and absence management for the operations team
32. Provide contactor assessments for temporary employees
33. Assign and review Learning Plans for the operations team to ensure all are fully trained to carry out their jobs
Minimum Qualification (education, experience and/or training, required certifications):
1. Minimum of 5 GCSE’s or equivalent
2. Experience/knowledge of production areas
3. Effective time management and co-ordination skills
4. Previous demonstration of desired behaviours
Working Schedule:
1. Rotating shift: 4 consecutive working days followed by 6 days off
2. Banked hours: Extra hours may be accumulated and used for additional time off or schedule adjustments
