Job description
Job responsibilities
The Department of Dermatology is an integrated out-patient department with specialist dermatology nursing staff. The Department has three specifically designated and designed dermatological surgery theatres including extracted ventilation systems which is where minor ops and see and treat clinics would be carried out. The dermatology medical and nursing staff had considerable input into the design of the new unit. The department has developed considerably over recent years encompassing a more comprehensive allergy service.
It is intended that the appointee will assist in outpatient clinics (6.5 sessions) or dermatology surgery lists per week under the supervision of the Consultant Dermatologists. The appointee will build up to a full clinic depending on their capability/previous experience. A full clinic will comprise of 4 new patients and 8 follow-ups. Some of the dermatology surgery lists may be see and treat clinics rather than pure surgery lists, however this will vary depending on the level of experience of the individual and the requirements of the service.
1.5 sessions will be allocated to administration and a further session is allocated to covering the ward round/ward referrals and any issues in terms of day treatment and phototherapy, where the senior nursing staff requires medical input. With the introduction of a ward-based inpatient system in the hospital and improved techniques in managing dermatology patients, dermatology inpatients are quite infrequent and most ward-based work is assisting ward referrals, usually with the two Consultants. Reviews of ward patients have allocated session and there is normally some spare time for additional administration time. Regional meetings are usually held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday afternoon in the month. The post does involve cover of administration when colleagues are on annual leave.
