ADHD Aware is a national member-led charity founded in Brighton that supports adults affected by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). We offer a mixture of in-person and online peer support groups for adults with ADHD, their partners, and parents of children or young adults with ADHD. Our services also include courses for individuals and couples, neurodiversity training for organisations and online support via member subscription, email, website and social media. What are we looking for?
We are currently recruiting for a Trustee Secretary to join our Board of Trustees. This is a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the board, maintaining governance processes, and supporting the charity’s strategic direction.

What are we looking for in a Trustee Secretary?
Objectives
* To work with the rest of the Board of Trustees, to continue and to sustainably develop the charity’s work supporting ADHD adults nationally (and locally in Brighton), primarily through the delivery of peer support services.
* To ensure that ADHD Aware maintains good governance practices and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
* To provide governance and administrative support to the Board, ensuring accurate documentation of meetings and decision-making processes.
* To act as a key point of contact for trustee communications and governance-related matters.
* To work with the Board of Trustees and the Policy subcommittee to help develop and strengthen internal policies.
Responsibilities
* Preparing and distributing agendas for board meetings in collaboration with the Chair and other trustees.
* Taking and maintaining accurate minutes and actions of board meetings, ensuring they are distributed and approved in a timely manner.
* Keeping records of board decisions, policies, and governance documents.
* Ensuring compliance with the Charity Commission and other regulatory requirements, including timely filing of annual reports and other governance documents.
* Supporting board recruitment, induction, and training of new trustees.
* Acting as the custodian of the charity’s governing documents and ensuring policies are reviewed and updated as required.
* Assisting with administrative tasks related to the governance of the charity.
* Working with the Board on ADHD Aware’s Strategic Plan including working on advancing the charity’s policies.
* Awareness of the requirements and laws around charity status.
* Appropriately promoting ADHD Aware’s work.
* Implementing and promoting ADHD Aware’s Equality and Diversity Policy.
* Implementing and promoting ADHD Aware’s Safeguarding Policy and Procedures.
* Undertaking all other reasonable tasks and responsibilities requested by the Board.
Experience, Knowledge & Skills
* Experience in administrative, governance, or secretarial roles, ideally within the charity or voluntary sector.
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to produce accurate minutes and maintain clear records.
* Understanding of charity governance and compliance requirements (or willingness to learn).
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information.
* A passion for ADHD Aware’s mission and a commitment to good governance and the responsibilities of trusteeship.
Time Commitment
* Standard terms of Board Trustees are a period of three (3) years. Board members can usually be re-elected for a period of another three (3) years thereafter, for one (1) further term.
* ADHD Aware Board members will regularly attend Board meetings and/or send apologies with sufficient warning (no less than two days ahead of meeting).
* Report accordingly to the Chair and Board of Trustees.
* All Board members are also expected to respond within two (2) weeks to a request for review of information and comment by any other member of the Board.
* If a Board member misses more than three (3) consecutive meetings, it may be appropriate to ask that Board member to resign or take a leave of absence.
* Trustees will provide a minimum three (3) month notice period if they choose to step down.
Location
Please note: this role can be carried out largely remotely (via Teams or Zoom). Very occasionally, the Board may gather or take meetings at its main headquarters location in Brighton, East Sussex.
