This is an opportunity for a full-time specialty post in General Adult Psychiatry on male and female general adult wards. There are 2 consultant psychiatrists who cover across both wards. The appointee will work together in a 'firm' structure, with one of the consultants and an SpR or Specialty doctor. There is also a foundation doctor on one of the ward teams. Cross cover may be needed between teams at times.
The post holder will be required to demonstrate that they have foundation level experience and ideally some experience working in psychiatry. Although this is a non-training post, the successful candidate will be assigned a consultant educational supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There is close working in collaboration with the senior doctors, which allows a lot of opportunity for building confidence in history taking, mental state examination, and decision making around patient care. Some of the main diagnoses of patients on the ward are schizophrenia, mania, depression, and personality disorder. There are often complex cases, and time is taken to formulate these through discussion within the medical team, as well as through reflective practice with the Multidisciplinary team. Reflective practice takes place three times a week on the ward, facilitated by a psychologist, and the post holder would be encouraged to attend at least some of this, as part of the work on the ward, and for their learning.
Main duties of the job
1. Conduct clerking of new admissions (history and physical examination)
2. Taking bloods and interpreting results and acting upon abnormal bloods

4. Request imaging from radiology and look out for the results.
5. Manage patients' overall physical care. Management of diabetes is common.
6. Document conversation during ward round and patient reviews. Document mental state examinations with correct interpretation.
7. Undertake reviews of patients in between ward rounds.
8. Develop confidence in history taking, mental state examination, and management through the time in the post.
9. Complete patient discharge summaries.

12. Phone relatives to gain collateral history.
13. Provide day-to-day supervision of medical students.
14. Participation in Multi-Disciplinary Team working, including participating in the morning meetings.
15. Demonstrate awareness of national and local guidelines relating to specialty (e.g., NICE guidelines) and influence care developments in accordance with these.
16. Take part in Audit and Clinical Governance.
17. Take part in educational opportunities.
