About the Job
About Us
Basketball Northants, the affiliated Basketball England Association for Northamptonshire, takes the lead where young people are supported and empowered, whatever their challenges, through the sport of basketball.
Through our programmes and supporting partners, we coach and mentor young people from diverse backgrounds to engage in basketball as a diversionary activity away from anti-social behaviour, violence & crime.
Children from the poorest families are 3 times more likely to not participate in any extra-curricular activities compared to those from wealthier families, and they lack many opportunities that are available to their wealthier peers. They are more likely to leave school with no qualifications, be excluded from school, get involved in crime and gang violence, and suffer from mental health issues.
Basketball Northants, through NNStreetballers clubs, is here to make sure children who love the game get the best possible chance to do well in life and have the resilience to overcome life’s difficulties.
Young people who have the opportunity to play sport regularly and be mentored by coaches who are role models are more likely to become adults who have confidence, resilience, and leadership potential.
Join us in our vision of supporting these young people in Daventry with an extension of our successful NN Streetballerz programme based at the DSLV Academy.
The Role
We are looking to recruit a qualified, skilled Basketball Coach on a part-time basis to work with Chris Tawaih (MK Breakers player & development coach) to lead the programme.
The role will be based after school at the DSLV Academy and will include planning and delivering a comprehensive high-quality coaching and mentoring programme.
The programmes will include a Slam Jam club for primary age children, leadership training, and after-school coaching sessions for 14 to 16 year olds to include boys and girls.
We would like to see the development of the club to provide competitive opportunities for all players.
There would be an opportunity to extend the work to deliver half-term and holiday camps during the school holidays if desired.
As a coach, you will also work closely with Basketball Northants to collect high-quality data to demonstrate the effectiveness of what we do and to quantify the difference we make to our young people. Data is collected at designated times throughout the year and can include case studies, questionnaires, skills, and fitness testing.
You will also regularly review the young people's progress and set targets for their future development.
Basketball Northants is committed to Safeguarding & Child Protection and you will ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to at all times and will maintain accurate records of all registered participants and volunteers at all planned sessions.
The Person
To be considered for this role, you must hold a NGB Level 2 Coach Award (or equivalent) and have up-to-date first aid training. First aid training costs will be supported if required.
Experience of successfully delivering and managing basketball programmes for children and young people in a school, community, or sports club setting would be an advantage.
You will also demonstrate strong mentoring skills and experience, as well as being a confident and capable IT user with excellent administrative and organisational skills needed to effectively plan and manage the programme and capture all relevant data as required.
You will be highly passionate about the Basketball Northants mission, values, and beliefs and helping young people learn and develop.
You are expected to commit fully to the Basketball England Safeguarding & Child Protection policy.
Basketball Northants is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children; therefore, applicants must be willing to undergo child protection training and screening including an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and obtaining satisfactory references from past employers.
