There is a vacancy for a full-time (10PA) consultant post to work in Cedar Ward which is a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) based at West Park Hospital in Darlington. This is a replacement post and an exciting opportunity to be part of a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team working in a dynamic and highly specialised environment.
Cedar Ward is one of two PICUs within the trust. The other PICU is Bedale Ward and this is located at Roseberry Park Hospital in Middlesbrough. Cedar Ward takes referrals for patients based in the geographical areas of Durham, Darlington, Easington, Northallerton and Harrogate. Bedale Ward takes referrals from patients based in Teesside (Hartlepool, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland and Middlesbrough), York and Scarborough.
The main inpatient beds for the South Durham locality are located at West Park Hospital. There are two wards admitting patients with acute mental health problems at West Park Hospital (Maple and Elm Wards). These inpatient wards will provide the inpatient psychiatric care to the acutely unwell clients from Darlington and South Durham areas.
West Park Hospital also has 15 bedded Willow Ward for Rehabilitation Psychiatry.
Main duties of the job
Cedar Ward is a 10 bedded in-patient unit, located at West Park Hospital, Darlington. Cedar Ward provides psychiatric intensive inpatient care to acutely unwell and disturbed female and male clients, aged 16-65 years. It provides intensive care for all clients requiring a high level of care from the County Durham, Northallerton and Harrogate area. The unit includes a seclusion room and clients generally have to be detained under the Mental Health Act prior to admission.
Cedar Ward provides a multi-disciplinary service for people whose psychiatric or psychological condition requires them to be treated in a controlled environment, with a higher ratio of staff to patients, for the shortest period of time their condition allows. The unit emphasises multidisciplinary team working, recognising that the complex clients it serves, require efficient, effective, collaborative approaches to assessment, formulation and treatment planning. The unit is committed to Force Reduction drivers, both local and national and to enhancing the client experience of care. This involves leadership partnerships with psychiatry, psychology and nursing staff and an emphasis is placed on Positive Behavioural Support, encompassing least restrictive practice, therapeutic restrictive practice, therapeutic risk and highly skilled prescribing.
