DEPUTY MANAGER
(Nursing)
Responsible to: Care Centre Manager
Job Purpose: To support the Manager in the overall management of the home.
Assume responsibilities of the Manager in his/her absence.
To create an environment which respects the rights and wishes of the residents and encourages person centred care and independence.
This is not a supernumerary post and the post holder will be included in staffing numbers.

Management Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Care Centre Manager in the overall management of the home promoting a homely, safe environment.
2. Provide “on-call” duty as required.
3. Maintain positive links with professional colleagues such as GP’s, District Nurses and Social Workers.
4. Act as a role model leading by example in attitude, behaviour and conduct.
5. Respect the privileged relationships that exist with residents, practicing integrity in all dealings with their private and financial affairs.
Resident Care and Services:
1. Provide and maintain effective management and leadership promoting high standards of safely delivered nursing and personal care in a person centred way.
2. Adopt an open management style which facilitates a working environment to promote team working, and one which supports learning and development.
3. Assist the Care Centre Manager to ensure all records as required by the company, regulatory and statutory bodies are maintained appropriately. Report incidents as necessary.
4. In conjunction with the Manager ensure that residents’ care records are reviewed at appropriate intervals, at least monthly, and that these are completed and updated accurately involving the residents in review of their care.
5. Ensure that the needs of the residents are compatible with the Care Centre’s registration and that the needs can be met by the Care Centre.
6. In conjunction with the Manager review and evaluate all accidents to residents, untoward incidents and resident admission to hospital ensuring as necessary care interventions are updated.
7. Ensure by direct involvement and support of other staff that resident care is implemented in accordance with the residents’ care needs and through reference to their care plan.
8. Ensure that correct procedures are in place and adhered to in order to maintain safe handling and storage of medication.
9. Administer medication in accordance with the NMC Guidelines and company policy and ensure the safe and correct practices of the staff.
10. Assist with ensuring care practices are reflective of the requirements of the statutory bodies and that such practices are reviewed and developed regularly.
11. Assist with maintaining an efficient system for assessing and evaluating residents care needs and delivery of care in accordance with the care plan.
12. Liaise with relevant parties in order to facilitate resident care and wellbeing acting promptly in response to any changes in residents’ health status.
13. Report any shortfalls in the provision of resident care to the Care Centre Manager or Operations Manager.
14. Promote the effective and efficient use of all resources and supplies to maintain an adequate stock of items appropriate to the needs of the residents.
15. Adopt an approach to care which recognises residents as individuals, promotes flexibility, respects choice and involves residents.
16. Create an environment to support residents to express their views.
17. Encourage the staff team through reflective analysis to develop the care and services provided facilitating, managing and evaluating change processes.
18. Assist in drawing up an annual development plan for the Care Home and to assist in reviewing the implementation of the plan.
Human Resources:
1. In the absence of the Manager to arrange appropriate staff levels by way of numbers and skill mix to cover the duty rota.
2. Delegate duties to other staff members and monitor their performance to ensure the required standards are maintained.
3. Participate in staff training and provide support to junior staff.
4. Assist in the recruitment of new employees to ensure an appropriate staff skill mix to fulfil the company’s aims and meet the needs of the residents.
5. Assist in ensuring all new employees complete an appropriate period of orientation and induction.
6. Implement the company disciplinary and grievance procedures as appropriate.
7. Encourage staff in their own development providing support and guidance as necessary.
Communication:
Provide accurate and effective communication between professional colleagues, visitors and the staff team.
Quality:
1. Be conversant with the homes policies and procedures and the regulatory Framework with which the home is required to comply.
2. Assist in ensuring that the home operates in accordance with these policies.
3. Assist in the reviewing of the homes policies and procedures, developing these as necessary in accordance with the changes in care practices and statutory requirements placed on the home.
4. In the absence of the Manager be responsible for the investigation of complaints/concerns in accordance with the company policy reporting to management as necessary.
5. Based on the outcome of the investigation ensure corrective action is implemented as appropriate.
Marketing:
1. Participate in the marketing of the Care Centre and develop links which establishes the Care Centre as part of the local community.
2. In liaison with the Care Centre Manager ensure that resident vacancies are acted upon promptly.
3. As necessary carry out the assessment of potential residents and as appropriate arrange admission to the Care Centre.
General:
1. Contribute to the continuing development of the home through professional self-development and the promotion of evidence based practice.
2. Undertake other duties applicable to the post.
3. Ensure confidentiality is maintained in handling all sensitive information to include resident and staff information.
4. Maintain accurate records in accordance with Company policies.
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
Be conversant with and ensure the requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Fire Regulations are complied with. Advise the Manager of any areas of concern.
Every employee has a responsibility for giving due regard to their own safety and the safety of their colleagues, residents and visitors to the home.
Each employee will comply with the health and safety policy and fully observe the safe working practices.
NIGHT DUTY:
This is a wakeful duty unless notified otherwise.
REVIEW:
Changes which affect the organisation may necessitate the responsibilities of this post to be reviewed following consultation with the post holder.
This document is intended as a guide to the general scope of duties and as such is intended to be flexible. The post holder may be required to undertake other duties at the discretion of the Manager.
