Purpose of the Role
The Senior Field Application Engineer will support customers use of McLaren Applied hardware, embedded software, off-car configuration and data analysis software. This role may include worldwide travel, unsocial hours and weekend work.
You will interact with other departments across the company to help customers maximise the value of McLaren Applied products.
You will represent the customer internally, to positively steer future development and influence the product strategy.
The role will focus on providing support to a new, major, customer as part of a dedicated support agreement. This will involve onboarding the customer with McLaren Applied hardware and software and supporting them through all phases of the development cycle, including system specification, development, test, delivery and support. This role may also provide additional support to other already supported customers during peak periods.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Provide support at the track, remotely and at customer premises through all phases of the customer development cycle.
2. Represent the customer’s viewpoint within McLaren Applied.
3. Work with internal teams to push through issue resolution.
4. Assist with improving departmental procedures and knowledge base.
5. Take on development projects and drive these forward with minimal supervision.
6. Diagnose hardware and software problems, probing problems to objectively understand whether it is a failure of the system or its environment.
7. Recognise opportunity to add value with additional McLaren Applied products or solutions.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
1. Significant understanding and experience of the electronic elements of motorsport systems and powertrains, across all phases of the development cycle, including:
1. System specification and architecture
2. Control units, interface units and communication protocols (e.g. CAN, CAN-FD)
3. Sensors and Harnessing
4. Actuators and drives – e.g. valves, motors
5. Control Software
6. Powertrain and Chassis control, Hybrid systems
7. MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow
8. Compilation to Virtual and Embedded devices
9. Test and Calibration
10. Software in the Loop, Driver in the Loop and Hardware in the loop
11. Dynamometers and test rigs
12. Calibration software and tooling
13. Delivery and Support
14. In field / trackside support
15. Data Analysis and tooling
2. Experience of the following tools:
1. MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow
2. Data analysis tools such as ATLAS
3. ECU set-up tools such as System Monitor
4. Excel VBA
5. Knowledge of one or more general purpose programming languages including, but not limited to: Python, Java, C#, C++
3. Accurately interpret observations noted in the field to advise solutions or escalate appropriately.
4. Diagnose hardware and software problems under pressure with a detailed and methodical approach.
5. Ability to adapt to changing requirements and develop novel engineering solutions with limited resources.
6. Good communicator with the ability to capture information quickly and accurately.
7. Experience of working trackside in a motorsport environment.
8. Educated to undergraduate level and awarded a minimum of an Upper Second-Class Honours Degree (2:1) in a relevant engineering discipline. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
