This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon, with a special interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery.
The post will be based at St James's University Hospital. You will be joining a team of five surgeons (3 full-time and 2 part-time) who currently provide the full range of Upper Gastrointestinal services both benign and malignant.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals currently has one of the largest Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery units in the UK. We typically perform 80-100 oesophago-gastric resections per year, with a mix of open and minimally invasive approaches. We provide a comprehensive Tier 4 weight-loss surgery service, and a full range of primary and revisional hiatal surgery.
The appointee will have an on-call commitment of 1 in 10 shared with the other Upper Gastrointestinal and HPB Surgeons.
Main duties of the job
1. To support the delivery of adult Oesophago-Gastric and general surgery services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and achieve and sustain performance against key national waiting time standards.
2. To contribute to the role of Leeds as a training centre for Oesophago-Gastric and General Surgery.
3. To improve the efficiency and productivity of the Oesophago-Gastric and general surgical services.
4. To help develop Leeds as a centre of excellence for Oesophago-Gastric and general surgery.
5. To provide support and clinical expertise to the teams based in referring centres.
6. To maintain and develop clinical research in Oesophago-Gastric and general surgery.
7. To contribute to and improve the quality of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Oesophago-Gastric and general surgery.
8. To improve the quality of care and increase the scope for innovation.
9. To facilitate and develop research interests in Oesophago-Gastric and general surgery.
10. To participate in a 1 in 10 consultant rota to provide acute in-hour and out-of-hours general surgery.

Job responsibilities
The post-holder will provide Oesophago-Gastric and General surgical services in theatre, outpatient, ward and endoscopy unit settings. The post-holder will have a case mix of cancer, benign specialist and general surgery. There will be a requirement to contribute to the departments on-call rota, teaching and education programme and research projects. Surgical working requires good team working. The role of each Consultant is intended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants in the Department and in the Trust.
Specifically, the post holder will be competent to perform independently a full range of benign and malignant Oesophago-Gastric surgery including:
1. Oesophagectomy
2. Gastrectomy
3. Fundoplication
4. Hiatal hernia repair
5. Bariatric surgery
6. Revisional OG surgery
7. Cardiomyotomy
8. Upper GI Endoscopy (will require evidence of JAG accreditation)
9. Emergency management of perforations of oesophagus
10. Bariatric emergencies
The successful candidate will be expected to have an active role in the Oesophago-Gastric and Bariatric MDT and will undertake both cancer and benign outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists. The candidate will undertake acute on call for general surgery and in particular will perform acute biliary surgery.
The Trust is committed to transforming our acute surgical pathway by delivering the principles of the Surgical Ambulatory Emergency Care (SAEC) programme. This role will play a pivotal part in delivering consultant-led, rapid, ambulatory diagnosis and treatment in the acute pathway, from triage to on the day diagnostics and surgery, and be part of the development of an exciting new centre enabling this.

Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent qualification
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process.
Desirable
* Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
Experience
Essential
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in UGI and General Surgery - especially the management of acute general surgery.
* Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in General and upper GI surgery.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
* Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* Effective interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
