We are looking for someone to join our team and develop skills and understanding. A pharmacy technician works closely with a pharmacist to ensure the health and safety of their patients. They locate, dispense, pack, and label a prescribed medication for a patient that is then reviewed for accuracy by a pharmacist before dispensed to the patient.
You will supervise some aspects of the work of Senior Assistant Technical Officers in the dispensary. Observing confidentiality of all information concerning patients and comply with procedures relating to the Data Protection Act and represent the service to a high professional standard in conduct, manner and appearance.
Main duties of the job
* Work effectively as part of the dispensary team in dispensing medicines for in-patients, out-patients and patients on discharge, as required; supplying controlled drugs and maintaining associated records, in accordance with standard operating procedures.
* Undertake the ACPT (Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician) Scheme and undertake the final accuracy check of all medicines dispensed (ward stocks, medicines for inpatients and patients on discharge) in accordance with local policy, as part of the dispensary and outpatient pharmacy rota.
* Issue completed prescriptions to patients or to their representatives; give information and advice relating to the use of medicines or products.
* Liaise with purchasing staff about the availability of out-of-stock medicines / pharmaceutical sundries to ensure the completion of outstanding prescriptions.
* Answer routine queries and resolve problems from patients and wards / specialities.
* Co-ordinate the provision of medicines to hospital wards and departments; advise staff on supply and storage of medicines, stock control and any other relevant information to ensure compliance with local policies and procedures.
* Prioritise own workload; supervise and co-ordinate the workload of Senior Pharmacy Assistants and other less experienced members of staff, to meet the needs of the Department.
You will be an integral part of the dispensary team contributing towards delivering a comprehensive pharmacy service to the acute hospital wards, other patient settings, and the community hospitals.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Where appropriate, and where agreed with the Pharmacy Operations Manager as a requirement for further development of the service, undertake the ACPT (Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician) Scheme. Subsequently, as an ACPT, undertake the final accuracy check of all medicines dispensed (ward stocks, medicines for inpatient, outpatient and on discharge) in accordance with local policy, as part of the dispensary rota.
Person specification
Qualifications and training
* NVQ level 3 / BTEC in Pharmacy services (or nationally recognised equivalent qualification)
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Accredited as Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician
Knowledge and experience
* Well-developed organisational, time management and planning skills; ability to organize workload
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team
* Experience of working within the NHS
* Experience of healthcare provision
* Experience of hospital pharmacy
