Job Overview
The post holder will participate in all Departmental activities as an effective team member, supporting the ED Matron and Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses in the effective running of the Emergency Department. The aim of this role is to ensure patients are seen, treated, discharged, or transferred within the four-hourly emergency access standards.
The post holder will assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. This role will also teach and supervise qualified and unqualified staff, acting as a role model to junior staff. The post holder will take responsibility and accountability for a group of patients as well as take charge of the department when necessary.
Main Duties of the Job
* Assist with clinical duties in other areas of the Trust when the need arises.
* Assist with the monitoring of standards of care.
* Supervise and monitor the Emergency Department daily checklists.
* Assist in the delivery/transferring of critically ill patients to the imaging department and to other hospitals. To have undertaken the critical care transfer course.
* To shift lead as required, carrying the shift leader bleep and taking operational responsibility for the shift, including working knowledge of and ability to enforce the Escalation Policy as required.
* To deputise as Team leader during the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, ensuring team members’ developmental needs are met and that the team sustains high levels of efficiency and patient care.
* Ensure economical use of supplies, liaising with senior staff to provide the most appropriate equipment as per individual patient need.
* Supervise and participate in keeping accurate and legible records and be aware of the legal implications of these documents. (Ref NMC Rules) Date, Timed and Signed.
* To plan, organise and deploy staff according to competencies and workload in order to meet patient needs.
* Ensure continued development of leadership skills to enable the delegation of shift leadership.
