Job overview
We are looking for a motivated, organised and reliable individual to support the Motor Learning Laboratory at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. This laboratory is based within a large and dynamic Therapy Department.
Main duties of the job
* To assist in the development of therapy services by supporting staff in the assessment and treatment of highly complex patients and the day-to-day running of the therapy environment.
* Preparing the laboratory environment and patient before using the Motor Learning Laboratory and ensuring the necessary assessment documentation/processes and systems are ready for use.
* Support physiotherapists in delivering assessment and rehabilitation sessions in a treadmill based laboratory environment through controlling the laboratory equipment and through the use of the proprietary applications/software.
* After appropriate training to be able to input and process biomechanical data collected in the Motor Learning Laboratory using proprietary software.
* To monitor and initiate the order of specialist materials and equipment required (e.g within the specified area of work as guided by the line manager).
* To help develop web-based and patient information materials.
* To maintain accurate patient records and system databases.
* To liaise with laboratory, administration and therapy staff to ensure the smooth running of the facility and efficiency of the service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* To participate in and provide clinical treatment and rehabilitation programmes, following professional assessment and guidance.
* To demonstrate an understanding of basic mathematical concepts underpinning the use of computers to collect data in a technical environment.
* To liaise with the therapist as necessary regarding patient care and rehabilitation.
* To support patients, carers, staff and relatives by providing education and advice as appropriate under the instruction of therapists.
* To fully participate in the evaluation of rehabilitation programmes to ensure patients meet their ongoing health and rehabilitation needs.
* To maintain timely and accurate signed records and statistical information as required, this includes using paper records and entering information on to electronic databases.
* To assist in the training of newly appointed Therapy Assistants and Technical Instructors in basic elements of patient care, safety, and inducting into the department.
* To support the development of Therapy students and people considering Therapy as a career.

Communication & relationship skills
* Able to communicate clearly, succinctly and logically in verbal and written formats.
* To be an effective team member, respecting the work of others and representing the profession suitably at all times.
Knowledge, Training & Experience
* Good general level of education up to GCSE Equivalent (Minimum GCSE Maths/ English or equivalent)
* Evidence of further education e.g. sports or exercise, anatomy physiology, exercise conditioning.
* Awareness of role of Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy
* Relevant A-levels/ higher education e.g. sport, health, science, IT or maths
* Experience of working in an acute healthcare setting, fitness industry or health promotion
* Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology
