What you’ll do:
The Engineering Manager is a core and critical position, responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the activities of a team of engineers and technicians. They ensure that the appropriate resources are available and aligned to enable the delivery of project and programme objectives.
As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibilities will involve:
Being the technical lead and responsible engineer for a number of projects, programs, or product developments. The Engineering Manager ensures the delivery of technically compliant solutions within the required project objectives (schedule, recurring and non-recurring budget, quality, and technical performance) and in compliance with the required processes and practices. The Engineering Manager is the primary technical point of contact/escalation for the product area, internally and externally.
Responsibilities:
• Provide appropriately skilled and aligned resources to deliver against project and programme objectives.
• Highlight any gaps in required skills/levels of resources needed in the short to medium term. Develop cases and plans for closure for approval. Execute to ensure timely delivery of goals.
• Identify potential problems/issues within Engineering projects/programmes and work to resolve or escalate as appropriate.
• Work closely with interdependent functions across the organisation to ensure customer needs, project demands, and internal requirements are all factored into operational engineering decisions.
• Utilise Engineering KPIs and metrics to measure performance and take appropriate actions to drive excellence in execution.
• Ensure functional excellence within the Engineering department, deploying common frameworks and processes within areas of responsibility.
• Act as a point of escalation for questions/decisions/problems that cannot be resolved. Delegate and educate others to ensure effective, quick decision making and reduce bottlenecks whenever appropriate.
• Ensure accreditation, retention, and adherence to relevant standards on behalf of the Company.
• Carry out PDRs for direct reports, working with appropriate technical specialists to identify and execute development plans for all team members.
Qualifications:
• Engineering degree or equivalent with at least 10 years of experience.
Skills:
• Ability to lead and manage high-performing multi-function engineering teams.
• Demonstrated engineering expertise and understanding of product, customer, and market.
• Ability to work within a large organisation in a matrix management structure.
• Decision making/problem solving – able to make decisions in complex and ambiguous situations with incomplete data.
• Ability to build excellent relationships with key project stakeholders and the wider business.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to provide role modeling to the organisation in line with the Business core values and behaviours.
• Expertise in engineering processes, practices, and measures of performance.
• Experience in leading Integrated Product Teams in a manufacturing company, preferably in the defense and/or commercial aerospace markets.
• Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Working knowledge of business finance and ability to link financial outcomes with operational actions and business strategy.
• Experience in leading and managing high-performing teams.
• Experience in one or more of the following: mechanical, electro-mechanical, fluid, mechanisms, structures, or systems product development.
• Motivated and proactive, driving solutions to completion.
• Comprehensive appreciation and understanding of the engineering product life cycle.
• Experience in requirements management and verification (Experience in a requirements management tool like DOORS/CRADLE would be beneficial).
• Strong understanding of Systems Engineering Management.
• Natural problem solver with a solutions-focused mindset.
