CLINICAL: BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICE: To develop an awareness of blood collection targets required to meet the hospital demands and contributing towards their achievement. To share clinical responsibility on blood collection sessions. To be part of a team, in enhancing individuals and teams performance. To confidentially screen donors and potential donors and promote good practice in the selection of suitable donors in accordance with the National Guidelines procedure. To be competent in all the skills of the donor care, including venepuncture, haemoglobin estimation, the selection and screening of donors and beside skills. To participate when required in emergency donor sessions. To be part of a multi-skilled team constantly learning and upgrading information and maintaining and improving new technical skills. To participate in co-ordinating changes in the management of blood collection sessions, ensuring effective communication across all departments. To assist in the recruitment of donors according to the needs of the team and service. CLINICAL: PHLEBOTOMY SERVICE: Safely obtain blood samples for the purpose of laboratory analysis from inpatients and outpatients in the Health and Social Services establishments and in the community. Assessing, implementing and evaluating the care needs of patients before, during and following phlebotomy from neonatal to elderly patients. To support other staff within the department. Take reasonable measures to ensure that own and other phlebotomy techniques and all aspects of blood donation are based on current sound evidence-based medicine. Evaluation of phlebotomy request forms to determine priority. Organise, when required daily outpatients phlebotomy clinics and taking blood specimens from outpatients and inpatients at the PEH, KEVII, Castel Hospitals, also Duchess of Kent and Bulstrode House. CLINICAL/ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Practising Infection Control procedures when taking specimens at all times. Undertaking additional training in the management and care of patients with central venous lines and venflons whilst obtaining blood samples, and meeting the agreed competence level. Initiate emergency resuscitation/first aid procedures as appropriate. Assessing correct destination and appropriate distribution of blood specimens. Taking responsibility for maintaining and replenishing stores, equipment and the safe disposal of used equipment. EDUCATIONAL/AUDIT: When necessary, to teach qualified nurses to take blood specimens using the evacuated tubes or needle/syringe technique. Supporting new members of the team ensuring their training and developmental needs are identified and addressed, and contribute to the overall learning culture in the service. Participate in departmental/hospital related audit processes as required. Undertake any additional training for self in the role of Screening Nurse within the Blood Transfusion. Attend regional/national meetings as appropriate. Attend monthly meetings with other staff with visiting Consultant in Transfusion Medicine. Participate and promote the National Blood Transfusion Service Communication Strategy. PROFESSIONAL: Adhere to the Code of Professional conduct as laid down by the Nurse and Midwifery Council. Taking all possible steps to safeguard the welfare and safety of patients, staff and self in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work (General Ordinance) Guernsey 1987. To maintain the highest level of personal and professional conduct at all times, and to act as a professional role model. To achieve own personal objectives and goals in order to maintain professional development and career enhancement in the service. Ensure that the Health and Safety policies, Standards procedures and National guidelines are adhered to at all times. Ensure information concerning donors, patients and other members of staff is treated as confidential. Ensure commitment towards Quality Standards. Ensure compliance to the latter is maintained as a priority consideration. OTHER DUTIES: To ensure all staff are familiar with and competent in the basic life support/fire procedures and to ensure all equipment is kept in good working order. Be familiar with the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist and be able to manage delegated responsibilities in her absence. Support the Clinical Nurse Specialist in implementing and managing change or new initiatives. Report all accidents according to policy taking appropriate action and records. Report at time of occurrence any incidents or complaints to Clinical Nurse Specialist and complete accurate records. Be conversant with the Hospital Fire, Major Incident Plan, Cardiac Arrest and other emergency procedures and be able to lead in appropriate action. REVALIDATION: In accordance with States of Guernsey legislation and the HSC procedure the Registration of Health and Social Care Professionals (COR001), all nurses and midwives who are States of Guernsey employees, contractors, agency workers or in any other capacity are practising as a nurse or midwife are required to have effective registration with the (UK) Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). In order to maintain effective registration with the NMC you must adhere to the Council's requirements for Revalidation. You must proactively manage all aspects of your Revalidation requirements including keeping an up to date portfolio and proactively seeking out opportunities for reflection, continuing education and professional growth. You must be proactive and cooperative in the appraisal and confirmer processes You must assist colleagues with relevant aspects of their Revalidation. This includes but is not limited to teaching, providing support and opportunities for Facilitated Reflective Practice, participating in professional discussions and providing constructive feedback. Depending on your level of experience and seniority the organisation may also require you to act as a Confirmer. If you are unable to meet any aspect of the Revalidation requirements or this element of your Job Description or you require additional support it is your responsibility to escalate this immediately to an appropriate senior nurse or midwife.
