Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Job Purpose:
* To support the Workshop Team Leader in all aspects of the workshop service delivery, including safeguarding the financial success of the service through routine monitoring of all Workshop service activity
* To safeguard the Health, Safety and Welfare success of the service through the provision of a rigorous Health & Safety culture, ensured by proactive monitoring, excellent record keeping and instilling a Lessons Learnt culture throughout the team
* To provide support to the Workshop Team Leader in providing the effective and efficient management of vehicle maintenance to the Council’s fleet (in accordance with ‘O’ licence or MOT requirements where appropriate)
* To be fully converse on the requirements of the Operator’s License in respect of record keeping
* To ensure the workshop delivers to the required standards of performance including customer service and efficiency
* To support the Workshop Team Leader in all aspects of innovation ensuring the Lewes Waste Service is in time with technological and digital evolution within the wider industry
* To proactively manage and resolve workshop issues, identifying and implementing services improvements
* To act as an ambassador for the council working with customers, business and other organisations

Course contents
* Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
* The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
* Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
* Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
* The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
* Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
* Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
* Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
* Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
* Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
* To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
The delivery of this course takes place over 3-years and is conducted through 1-week block release every other month from start to finish. A course plan is issued on enrolment covering the whole apprenticeship duration so that dates are issued well ahead to ensure best planning for the employer and apprentice allowing maximum attendance on all dates given.
The apprentice will gain valuable workplace experience through the completion of this qualification and will achieve the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician through City and Guilds allowing for eligibility to apply to the relevant body as a qualified Engineering Technician. For further development there is opportunity in the future to then progress to a Master Technician once skills from the Level 3 have been thoroughly put into practice.
More training information
This role will involve on the job learning at our Newhaven Depot as well as offsite training delivered at IPS International in Medway, Kent, every 8-weeks conducted in one-week blocks (travel and accommodation will be provided if necessary).
When applying you must be able to commit to these “away from home” training weeks.
